Are 1st edition games normally better? (Anymore that is)

It seemed that with the SNES... things kept getting better until the system was done and we moved on to the N64.
Same thing with other systems out there.

But it seems that ever since the N^4 / Dreamcast / Ps2 that games (which are the 1st editions) seem to be the best.

For example... SUper Mario 64, Pilot wings 64..etc... those were better than the last games to come out.

On the Gamecube, it seems that Rogue Leader 2, Luigi's mansion, SSBM, pikmin all had quality into them..... even NHL Hitz 2002 had better qaulity (IMO) than the newer ones.

I know there are good games all throughout the systems life.... in fact, there can be mind blowing games... but it always seems that the 1st games have the most put into them.

Anyone else think so?

I don't, infact I usually don't think there's enough choice at first, and that it takes at least a few months for the good titles to come in.

N64 had Goldeneye, Turok and some mediocre games. It took a few more months for Mario 64 to come, and then about a year (I believe) for Zelda. I'm of course speaking of Europe, the release dates may of been different in other places.

PS2 didn't offer much either. There was no Final Fantasy X, no GTA 3, no Metal Gear Solid 2. The only good games that I can recall that followed shortly after the consoles release was Tekken Tag and Timesplitters.

And Gamecube I think did the worst. Luigi's Mansion (only decent IMO), Waverace, Eternal Darkness and Pikmin. Sure, those were all good games, but not the best that Gamecube had, or will have to offer. There was so Super Mario Sunshine, Wind Waker or Metroid Prime, and over here SSBM took until the summer. And of course, there was no games like Tales of Symphonia, Paper Mario 2, Metroid Prime 2 and the yet to be released Zelda GCN.

So i'm not really sure what you're talking about BV, lol.

I don't agree with you BV. The best games for any system almost always come later in the life span, when programmers & devs have learned how to use the system to its fullest.

RE4 and GTA: San Andreas are good examples. I'm not into the GTA series by any stretch of the imagination, but what Rockstar managed to do with the PS2 for that game is nothing short of amazing, and I'm sure knowing the PS2 as well as they do played a part of that. MGS 3 and GT4 are also good examples for the PS2.

I don't speak for everyone, but I will say that most of my favorite Gamecube titles (with the exception of Luigi's Mansion) all came out well after launch. Animal Crossing, Wind Waker, Metroid Prime, Tales of Symphonia, Viewtiful Joe...most came out after the GC had been out a while.

You're being way too nostalgic. Try to live in the present sometime, man. :p

Au contraire - Eternal Darkness is one of the top 5 games of this gen on any system.
Heck yeah..... Eternal Darkness was AWESOME. I want the developer back at Nintendo :lol

Man.... its too bad they didn't give being a 2nd party another chance.

Eternal Darkness is definitely one of my all time favorites :D

Eternal Darkness wasn't a launch title? Was it? *Scared he's going crazy*

Eternal Darkness came out late 2002 in Europe I believe. Anyway, my bad.

The PS2 releases were brutal. Its first year of game releases were terrible. The RPGS were particularly terrible and I was pretty mad because of how much I like RPGs. Eternal Ring, Evergrace, Ephemeral Fantasia (The 3 E curse!), Orphen, Summoner and Oni all did terrible - mediocre. So did Okage (in reviews) but I thought it had character at least.

Hey now, I REALLY liked Oni. I don't see why that game gets dissed so badly. It's really not a bad game at all save for poor controll, which I got used to quite easily. One of my favourite PS2 games in my collection.

for his region it probably was.

and ... luigi's mansion was a killer game. It was just too short.
I love that game though.

SSBM and the first Rogue Leader were, in my opinion, probably the two best GC games. The new Zelda might knock that, maybe even RE4, but as for all the Metroids, Marios, and the like were all short of amazing.

BV, when you said Rogue Leader 2 did you mean Rogue Squadron 2?
