Console Wars: Six Years Later

It's great to see EGA active again, but it's just not EGA unless we have at least one console war thread. :D

We're now six years into the current generation of consoles and a lot has changed since the 360 launched and it all started. The Wii phenomenon finally died down and now the system is on life support. The PS3 is now flooded with great games and is now cheaper than the 360. The $600 price point is a thing of the past and it's really come into it's own as a viable console.

So six years later what does everyone think? Has the PS3 overcome its initial troubles or is the 360 still the better HD console? Was the Wii ever really a worthwhile console or just a gimmick?

Personally, I think you're all wrong and PC is just best. :lol

Feature-wise both PS3 and 360 are even. The only thing that 360 really triumphs over the PS3 is it's online functionality. Sure PSN is free but, it's stability and functionality is still behind XBL and it shows no sign of getting better.

Also, PC has no say in this matter as it is a Console War. =P

I considered PSN pretty much even until earlier this year. PSN getting hacked and going down for a month definitely hurts its quality a lot in my eyes. I would be willing to pay yearly for a better service like XBL. That being said, Steam is better than both. Like I said, PC always wins. :lol

Since I have gone through 2 PS3's, I have absolutely 0 faith in the console. I really miss the games I played on it, but I go over my cousin's house a couple times a month and play them there. I was so pissed when my second PS3 died.

I think that my NES is working just fine after six years. Wait, I mean 28 years.

Maybe I'll buy a PS3 on Thursday. Used, of course. Can't spend too much on something that could end up as a smoking turd.

I wish that my 360 had been able to play Blu-rays so I dropped about $100 on a Blu-ray player. But I'm still really happy with my 360. I had a scare a couple months ago when I thought it red-ringed again, but fortunately it didn't, so I've had my current xbox for 3 or 4 years.

The latest dashboard update makes things look really nice.

PS3 is, imo, best console this gen. Of course, if I had my choice, I'd buy another gaming PC, but I unfortunately can't afford one.

The 360 has a lot of nice features (And probably the most comfortable controller I've ever held...), but I still like my PS3 better.

I say the Wii did very well, for no more than it was, but certainly can't be considered the best.

The PS3 just seems to work better.. I fixed my friend's red ringed 360 and played it for a couple of nights (To make sure it worked and whatnot. ;)) and the controls seemed.. less fluid, if that makes any sense. Might have just been the games or a problem with that particular console, but I was really disappointed.
The PS3 also seems to have the better exclusives, imo. I think the only 360 exclusive I've even been remotely interested in was GoW.

PS3. All the way. Hands down. Everyone who thinks otherwise is wrong. :p

The 360 (now that is doesn't have a failure rate of 25% and a lifetime expectancy of about 2-3 years) is fine as a piece of hardware, and I do prefer the 360 controller to the PS3's, but in the hands of Microsoft it has become a way for that company to enter your home and extract money from you in reprehensible ways. The dashboard updates' sole purpose is to inundate you with advertisements and make more money off of you through a service you already pay yearly for. Microsoft should be ashamed of themselves for their proprietary hard drives, controllers that require AA batteries, tiered online service, etc. etc.

Sony is devious too, but at least they aren't so up front about how they gouge you. At least they fund some 1st party studios and allow them some modicum of freedom and let them take some risks to actually try new things in games and expand what is possible in the medium. The whole getting hacked thing was seriously uncool, but Microsoft routinely gathers and sells a bunch of your personal information on a regular basis anyway. They both dropped the ball on the "personal information" area. Sony more so, but, *&^% happens.

Let me put it like this: If you've owned a 360 since launch and have paid for XboxLive every year since then you've actually paid more for your console that people who bought the PS3 for $600. Both companies are extorting money out of you, but at least Sony respects you enough to let you know what you're getting into ahead of time.

I have nothing against the Wii. It's an average to slightly above average console. As such, who cares?
---------------------------------------------------

Now this is like the console wars of old. :lol

360 purely on the amount of enjoyment I have gotten out of it. Despite the horrible quality control and the Gold subscription service, in the end, it was all worth it. I've been very fortunate to not have an RROD situation (yet, but I'm crossing my fingers.)

The online multiplayer in terms of features and overall stability cannot be touched by the other 1 1/2 consoles. PS3 is decent, but when it's left entirely to the hands of the developer to create a stable infrastructure you get mixed results. Some developers are amazing at it, while others, not so much. Meanwhile, the 360 is mainly taken care of in the back end by MS. Resulting in much smoother gameplay. As for the Wii? :lol :lol ...yeah.

I have all 3 consoles and my PS3 just recently got moved to the floor to make room for my new record player. I do plan on booting it up again soon, but right now, I barely have enough motivation/time to play games. So the 360 gets the nod. Maybe when Operation Raccoon City is released, I might pick that up for both platforms.

But does something like advertisements on the dashboard really matter? They are getting more money out of the 360, but the ads aren't detracting from the good of the console. There is no denying that Microsoft has been exploitative in some areas this generation, but this doesn't necessarily have any bearing on the 360 as a console. As long as the 360 is still providing really great, enjoyable games, it seems advertisements and the like are irrelevant. In terms of principles, you have every right to criticism Microsoft for being too profit-driven, but I don't think it's necessarily affected the product. The expensive hard drives, the tiered online system, these are issues to be sure, but when it came down to it Microsoft still provided a really good console with tons of games and the best online service on console to boot.

PC. Screw consoles :D Just kidding {kind of}. I say kind of because with the way things are going, there's really not gonna be anything unique to consoles that PC hasn't been doing for years anyways. And the things that were unique to consoles are disappearing, so I don't have much incentive to buy them anymore.

You know, unless watching Blu-ray movies is something you might ever want to do...

I know that my PS2 has served me VERY well as a DVD player. I expect a PS3 would be at least as useful as a Blu-Ray player.

On the other hand, the 360 does have Halo: Reach.

Any other games I have any interest in getting are on PS3, 360, and PC. Was there another console, some gimmicky nunchuck thingy with too many accessories? I forgot what that was since both PS3 and 360 have Move and Kinect respectively.

Personally, I don't watch movies all too much. But when I do, I watch via streaming.

Isn't it nice that basic Hulu shows are free to PC users. Steam updates are no extra charge to PC or PS3 users.

Unfortunately PS3 users need to pay for Hulu plus to access shows. As far as I understand, XBL is pretty essential for a 360. I can't afford to pay extra for that stuff.

I have all three consoles and I would say the 360 is my favorite, easily. I've put so many hours into various games. Granted, some are multiconsole, but even the exclusives have given me many hours of enjoyment.

The PS3 is better than I expected, though.

The Wii has just been a little disappointing overall.

360, hands down. Wii is barely hanging on but by a thread and the PS3 is just too plain for me. I have all three of them, yes, but the PS3 just doesn't do much for me other than the few games that I like to play on it. The 360 has so much more to offer as far as entertainment.

For me the PS3 is the overall winner mostly because of sheer amount of exclusive games that I loved for the console and vastly bigger amount of RPG support. When looking at the 360's library there are only 2 games I would even want for it: tales of vesperia and Lost odyssey. And since I do borrow my boyfriend's 360 to play both of these games I have no desire of ever buying a 360.

it all boils down to the games for me and the 360 got pretty beat by a bunch of RPGs getting better PS3 versions. That and as far as fighting/multiplayer games goes my area uses the PS3 versions more than the 360 versions so I rather play the competitive games for the ps3 rather than the 360. Plus online is free =P

as for the wii, I used to love it so much but the past year it fell very flat and uninteresting. Only saving graces are Skyward sword and the new kirby game.

So yeah I remember when I used to hate on the PS3 but now it is my favorite console XD.

BUT I love my laptop =3 I can play skyrim, Deus Ex, Touhou, and my favorite MMO ever Dungeon Fighter Online on it which makes it on par with my PS3

YES!!! Yes, where, when, how, and what is advertised to you matters a lot. No content delivery provider of any kind should have the right to expose you to content you do not choose to see, especially if it is content you are paying for. Advertising is minor manipulation at best, and coercion at worst, and in either case forcing you to be exposed to messages of the highest bidder is just plain devious.

If you don't believe me, read this: http://jsomers.net/DFW_TV.pdf

What you see becomes a part of you and changes you in ways you might not like or be aware of. The purpose of all advertisements is to create an anxiety and create the means of relieving that anxiety through purchase. So you can choose to enter into a continuous cycle of spending to relieve anxieties to become aware of new anxieties that require more spending, or just cut it off at the source. Pay attention to what you pay attention to, and don't be so blase about letting some corporation like Microsoft choose that for you. You deserve better.

There is no denying that Microsoft has been exploitative in some areas this generation, but this doesn't necessarily have any bearing on the 360 as a console.

It does because that is part of the experience of buying and using that product. Separating the product from the values of the company that makes it is irresponsible, especially in a Democracy that supports a capitalist free-market economy. What we choose to buy matters. It's another, almost more effective, way of voting. If we vote for exploitative companies by purchasing their products, we will be exploited. By purchasing a 360 you are supporting Microsoft's exploitation of you. You are, essentially, paying to be taken advantage of. We all deserve better.

Vote PS3. :lol

Also, sidenote, Sony also exploits us tremendously and should be admonished for it too. But they're not as bad as M$, yet...
