Creating a Powerful 2D console!

what all things would be good to creat one with.

I want a console w/ no 3D capabilities so it'll just run 2D games.

I'm thinking about trying to market a 2D console. yes I know you guys may think this is a joke..but its far from it.

I'm thinking a 2D console would be far less expensive to make than a 3D console.

256 sdram and Video Ram as well.
2-5 gig harddrive(Saves/Custom HD)
good processing power (2.0 GHz or more)
pretty good sound card
CD-Rom drive(maybe DvD)
Graphics Card I have no clue
6 button controllers similar to the Saturn pad.

I dont really know what to do when talking about this stuff, thats why I need some tech help.

But, I will try to get something similar off the ground. I honestly still think 2D has a huge fan-base. just big companies dont care they think GRAPHICS GRAPHICS!

sorry if I wasted anyones time w/ my post.

That's way overkill for a simple 2D console. The NES only has a 1.79 MHz processor and was able to handle SMB3.

The SNES:
CPU 16-bit
Work RAM for CPU--128KB
Clock Speed-- a blazing 3.58 MHz
PPU 16-bit Picture Processing Unit
Video RAM for PPU (PPU)--64KB Max.
Colors Per Screen--256
Total Colors Available--32,768
Max. Screen Resolution--512 x 448 pixels
APU 16-bit Audio Processing Unit (APU)
Sound channels--8

As for what you're trying to do, you would probably only need 256MB RAM only if running all games in 1080i with 64 player online mode running, which seems highly unlikely.

I'm just trying to say that what you picked is WAY overpowered. Price-wise, I'm not too sure. I know it's getting harder to find hardware that is slower than what you picked out, so it all depends on what is readily available.

I'm wanting to make one that is powerful, and yeah after re-reading my post I figured it would be overkill. I want it to be at least powerful enough to run Atomiswave Quality games w/ out any hassle... maybe even better, you know?

I tried several time in the past to make my own kind of Sega/Nintendo hybrid. However I had to do alot of emulation for it to play any games I made on the computer. This meant:

-Writing unique and orignal software for the unit
-COming with a way for the unit to read games ect.
-What format to use for making the games
- And more.

Even after 2 years of working on a prototype I still never got it to work the way I wanted. The Hardware would all work but the game programming and finding ways to emulate on a horrible budget of $5 is pretty difficult.

If you made it, would you mass produce, or maybe a better wording, produce? Like would this be for your personal enjoyment or are you looking for a profit?

I dunno really. I wanna try to get something out just to mess with right now and if its good I wanna try to get some help from a company of sort of produce them. would be cool.

It would be a complicated process to get them to be made by a company.
especially if you used parts from another system.

It would be cool to see it done... and have games released for it..etc

That is a way cool idea to build your own console. I actually enjoy 2D games a bit more than 3D games.
