Custom Hard drive upgrade- Does it improve performance?

Ive been wanting to upgrade my ps3 hard drive for a while, maybe to a 200gb,
I know that the hard drive the ps3 comes equipped with is a 5400 rpm model, so if i installed a 7200 or a 10000rpm model, would that result in a increase of performance?

I wouldn't think so as you don't actually install the game to a hard drive, rather you play it off the CD. Could be wrong on this though!

Games such as warhawk, if you downloaded it, run straight from the hard drive. I know socom confrontation will do so as well. Theirs lots of games that install partitions on the hard drive the first time you play it, such as ea skate.

Hmmm, well in that case you might see a bit of a performance boost with those games, but I doubt it would be very much. Why, you gonna put a 10k RPM Raptor in your PS3 or something, lol?

ha, yah right, i dont think they even make 10000rpm notebook drives yet, even if they did i don't think so. I was just gonna get a cheap 7200rpm 200gb drive in there.

Do it man! I heard it's super easy and if you have troubles there is plenty of guides on the net which can help. I'm pretty sure doing this will void the warranty, though, so proceed at your own risk :lol

Sony has been completely fine with people putting bigger harddrives onto the PS3.

TC: First off, welcome to the forums.

In response to your question, I cannot accurately say as I do not own a PS3. However, it's natural to think that faster RPM = faster load times. Just remember that with faster RPM comes more power consumption... make sure the PS3 can handle it first. Also, the natural RPM of the standard Sony HD might be the max for the console, due to the fact that you can't "overclock" a PS3 and thus the hard drive might go faster than the other components can catch up to, thus slowing it down again...

yah, lol i was looking in the official ps3 manual, they got a section telling you exactly how to do it.
Also i did some more reasearch, it seems as thou their is a slight, and when i was slight i mean very slight boost in performance when you put in a 7200rpm hard drive. But still, ill take it
