Do you think voice acting makes a big difference about when it comes to gaming?

Darth Revan is watching you.
I recently had a discussion with a friend of mine about Dark Cloud.

He has only played Dark Cloud 2. I told him that I thought Dark Cloud was better, which responded by saying,
"I thought you said it didn't have voice acting?"
Which struck me rather odd. I certainly don't think voice acting makes a game good. I'd rather there be no voices than for there to be bad ones. *coughapeescapecough*
What do you think? Does voice acting make a game good? Or can it have either effect? And do you prefer games with voice acting or without?

Usually when voice acting bothers me, it has to do with an RPG. I want to turn it off for some reason. I have never wanted an audible RPG, I'd rather read and enjoy the musical score in the background. I don't know if that is a carryover from the beginning of the old RPGs that just got in me or what. :-\

I think it can have a huge impact if done well. I can think of a few games that I highly doubt would have the same impact if there was no voice acting such as, FFX, Tales of Symphonia, and of course, the Metal Gear series.

It really depends on the game. I agree with Retro Junkie about RPG's having voice-overs. It just doesn't sound right. But it's great for action games because you want the fast paced action and not have to stop and read. Sometimes even bad voice-overs can be good (original Resident Evil comes to mind.)

So I say, yes it can as long as it's not an RPG.

I've been playing video games a long time much like you good people.I guess in all honesty,I've loved so many games from the time when audible voices were an awesome thing to hope for in the future. Now that that time has come,it's nice to see and certainly adds flavor, but I'll still love my games regardless.

God Bless.

YES. For me, it makes a big deal. If it doesn't have it, all well. If it does, it HAS to be GREAT. I can't stand bad voice acting. (Unless it'll be remembered for years and years to come.... :D) Anyways, I really enjoy Heavy Rain's voice acting for instance. That game is so based on story that it makes a big deal of how good voice acting is. Uncharted 2 was hilarious but it was because of good acting and delivery. Voice Acting is such a big deal to me in games.

Okay, here's another question. Which is more crucial to a game- Background music, or voice acting.

Depends. If the game has David Hayter, it is made for success.

Though I love it when the game allows me to change from English to Japanese VO. Makes it so much better when it comes to games from the East.

I don't think it has much effect when it comes to games, but there was this one game (i can't remember the name :-\) and it has this big muscly guy, so you thought he would have a deep voice to match, right? Wrong. He had this high pitched whiny voice. It was hilarious. :lol

Well I think when voice acting is good, you don't notice it as much, so it goes underappreciated.

It's when you play a game that has horrible voice acting that you think about games that had great voice acting.

I think voice acting is actually pretty important in rpgs, though. Sometimes just reading the text doesn't give the same impact as good voice acting.

Dracula: What is a man? A tiny little pile of secrets! But enough talk, have at you!

AGREED i was sad that they changed the dialogue in the psp version T_T

Depends on the game. If I'm gonna play one that borders on being a movie bad or no voice acting will be a deal breaker for me. I would not like the Metal Gear Solid series, Snatcher, or Shenmue (even if most of it in Shenmue was bad) if there was no voice acting. ;D

I've never considered the voice acting before; probably because if it's a good game I'll be too imersed to notice the finer details, such as voice acting. But, I believe that done right, and not overused, it can have a good impact upon a game, especially if the voice acter is good enough to key in with the characters persona, which can help a player become that bit more immersed with a game... But I've played games with no voice acting, just text, that are fine. And during a game, I generally have subs on, just to make sure I can hear what's being said.
That opinion forth, sometimes it's a pain. I hate it in Hack'n'Slash games, or Fighting games, when a character mouths the same words in an annoying tone, over and over again. Gets annoying.

And I'd put forth as previously stated; but to more detail, yes, voice acting (as I put forth) but in the context of a cinematic for example.
But as an overall, a good BGM has a greater affect than such a simple element as voice acting. Preformed correctly, the BGM will add to the very experience of the games scenery and story.
So, I'd say a BGM can be more curial than voice acting, easily.

Blaziiiiiing Dynamo!!! {if you played legend of Dragoon you'll get it :P} But yes, I agree, it gets extremely annoying after hearing it 150 times. It's like, dude, yes, I know the attack is called Blazing Dynamo, you don't need to tell me anymore! :lol

I remember when I played as Coa Coa (think it was Coa Coa) in DW:4... his normal attack would make him sound like a demented hen.

It really does depend on the game. The S.T.A.L.K.E.R series gets away with cheesy VA's because you're a bunch of guys fighting for survival in Ukraine.

Some games are just so terrible though: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bangt7d9vGA

Musical score, to me, is much more important. Unless it's "for the moment" I hate silence in video games. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, is a good example of awesome music, but that may be my bias towards metal-ish music scores in video games.

Re: Do you think voice acting makes a big difference about when it comes to gami

Depends on the game.

GTA is a good example. I hated Tommy Vercetti because of the way he talked. Alternatively, there were many characters from GTA VI that I quote to this day. Whoever voice acted Brucie really brought that character to life, and they managed to sell it even though he was so over the top. Brucie always made me laugh and I still occasionally find myself quoting him.

But for the most part voice acting is done poorly, and no voice acting at all would be preferable. If implemented well in the right type of game, it can certainly become a memorable part of that experience.
