Does Lip Syncing = Fraud?

I hope I spelled syncing right :lol

Ashlee Simpson lip Syncing?

^ topic.... and the following link brought this up.
How can someone get away with playing live and the vocals are not live?  LET ALONE, how can someone charge people money to watch them play live, when they are using pre-recorded voices?

No one really noticed, but 2 years ago at the super bowl, Shania Twain was lip Syncing.  I caught her.  1 of the fans pulled her arm, and the mic was totally away from her mouth and she stopped singing for a split second, BUT there was no break in her voice, and the song went on perfectly.

IMO Lip Syncing SUCKS! I think it is JUST as bad as fraud, pirating..etc. HECK you are CHARGING PEOPLE MONEY for something they are not getting when they see you live. It is wrong on so many levels.

then all these young kids are sayinh "yeah, *insert singer name* is an awesome singer, like OMG." when their favorite singer is a fake. That would tick me off.

Thoughts, opinions, please share them :)

If they did it all the time, than yeah.

But sometimes lip-synching is necessary. You brought up the Super Bowl, for example. Most, if not all, of the National Anthem singers will lip synch for that, from what I understand. They always pre-record the Anthem and then listen to it while they sing it, so that they don't mess up from nerves or from not being able to hear themselves because of the noise of the fans.

A lot of artists whose concerts rely heavily on dancing, such as Britney Spears and Janet Jackson, also do lip-synching, as it is tiring to sing and dance at the same time. But for what it's worth, Janet at least is definitely worth paying to see (I've been to one of her concerts...it was totally awesome!).

I think more artists don't lip synch than those that do. It just seems like there's a lot of it going on because it gets so much coverage. I can tell you some people that I've seen that didn't lip synch when I went to concerts they were in and they sounded awesome:

No Doubt
Pink
Avril Lavigne
Vanessa Carlton
Michelle Branch
Mariah Carey
Jessica Simpson
Alanis Morrisette
Celine Dion
Destiny's Child (I still don't like Beyonce though)

I really can't stand anyone that lipsync's, at least normally. Sometimes I can understand if they have an extranious circumstance they are dealing with, or is just doing something extra in the show that requires too much work to do all at the same time. But other than that, no.

This is why I don't like mainstream music like that, or any at all. They never seem to put on LIVE performances. That's what they are suppose to be, not a recording of them singing. I just have a really big grudge against that kind of music for some reason. Maybe the exclusion of the actual instrumintals that are included with the music that don't get credit, or the face that some don't even write their own songs. I just really can't stand stuff like that.

I would be furious if I payed "good money" to see a concert, and they were lip syncing... Might as well just stay home, listen to a CD, and save myself from losing money, standing amidst sweaty people, and having to watch music being "faked" like that.

The few concerts I've actually been to were mostly rock musicians though, and they like to get the crowd involved, something they definitely can't lip sync to. And anyway, the whole "point" of hearing live music is so that you can "feel" the music right there with you. The musicians are supposed to make mistakes here and there... It just feels more "real."

Ya, there's definitely no point in seeing a song performed live if it's just the cd. Even if the quality is far worse, that's not the point, as Johngamer said. I noticed on a lot of televised concerts that singers like Britney Spears and Hillary Duff lip sync all the time and no one seems to mind. Sure they're dancing and stuff too so it's hard to sing, but who goes to these concerts to watch them dance? I mean, I might, but people shouldn't be going to their concerts for that reason.

That's why you screw concerts and watch football, instead. :lol

I don't really care much for any certain artist; I don't really have a favorite. But I know that if I were a singer I could sing a full 2 hour concert in my very best singing voice, while dancing as well. I would get tired, hot, whatever, and that would affect my singing greatly. Maybe artists that lip-sync are just trying to work up to the point when they can perform a whole concert without being worn down as much.

Is it entertainment? People pay to be entertained. You'd be surprised how many people will a) never know or b) never care what goes on behind the scenes at a show. They just want to show up and have a good time. People never make a fuss about it unless someone is caught as an obvious fraud.

Besides, what can you do, sue Sat. Night Live for having a fraudulent show?

no... sue the band for putting on a fraudulent show :D

Didn't SNL have control of the sound setup though?

I don't condone lip-sinking, but hey, it's the entertainment business. If people are entertained, it's good. However, Simpson screwed up and broke rule #1... the show must go on...

In actuality, I wouldn't doubt if she had a backing track and was not going to lip-sync through the whole thing. I thought it was awesome how the band kept playing on without her though.

man... all lip-syncing is a fraud IMO.
entertainment or not... I am not entertained by lip-syncing :lol

HEY!! she keeps digging herself deeper:

Now she blames acid reflux.

My guess confirmed:

"Just like any artist in America, she has a backing track that she pushes so you don't have to hear her croak through a song on national television," Joe Simpson told Ryan Seacrest on Los Angeles radio station KIIS-FM.

Things like that are so why I need to work in the music industry.

"It was the band's drummer who pushed the wrong button onstage, he said." Is likely just a lie though. I mean, if any of you know drummers, you know that you don't leave that up to drummers.

Heck, I've worked as a sound-tech and if ANYONE is going to hit a sample like that, it'll be the soundman or the sound tech.

:lol :lol yup.... thats the truth.  they've been hit in the head too many times with a drumstick :lol  ;)

maybe thats just our personal band experience, no?

Man, I wish I had time for a band again.

are you sure mariah carey doesn't lip sync?

Yes, most of the time. I've seen her perform live 3 different times. One was at a full concert that was just her and the other two times were at benefit concerts.

I will say though that at Jingle Ball, she performed "Through the Rain" live but she did lip-synch to "All I Want For Christmas." But that was the only song I have ever heard her lip-synch at a concert I was personally at.

I suppose it's possible that for some TV shows or something she could have. But for the concerts I was there in person to hear, out of probably 20+ songs she only did one lip-synch.

The only concerts I've ever been to involved bands, so that's pretty much a guarantee that you're going to see them play a "live" show. Unless they guitar/bass/drum sync as well as lip syncing, which is unlikely...
