Dr.Pepper the official Drink of Major League Gaming?!

Kind of a weird choice, I think.

Although it's taken for granted that Mountain Dew is the major brand soda staking claim to the gamer demographic, Dr Pepper announced today it is the official beverage of the 2008 Major League Gaming Pro Circuit. The deal is a "cross-platform partnership" which includes a "Dr Pepper Ultimate Gaming House" at MLG events and a co-branded online collegiate gaming championship.

The Dr Pepper gaming house (an elaborate tent-like facility) will be present at every MLG event and includes various rooms "designed by premier gaming publishers" sporting the latest in gaming equipment. The house will also host pro-gamers and "high-profile entertainment and sports celebrities" to play against -- according to the press release -- "Dr Pepper fans." Do you have to bring a stack of Dr Pepper UPCs to prove allegiance or something?

The online collegiate gaming championship will identify the best college gamers (via migpro.com) in the country and they'll vie for an award of their own and a chance to attend the MLG Championship. If Dr Pepper gets traction off this deal we're expecting Team Fortress 2, CoD4 or Counter-Strike branded soda cans.

Dr. Pepper and Competitive Gaming together? I would think like maybe Bawls, Jolt, Mountain Dew, or Monster would be the official drink of MLG like they are for other leagues. Dr. Pepper doesn't really make someone picture Competitive Gaming.

And? What does that have to do with anything? Competitive Gaming is still in its infancy in the States. And when you think of an energy drink do you think of Dr. Pepper?
 
If not a proper energy drink such as Red Bull, Jolt, Amp, etc. I would have expected Mountain Dew, honestly. Dr. Pepper is pretty random.

What does it have to do? RESPECT! What does it stand for? USA!

Dr. Pepper was formed from a medicine! Energy Drink similarity? I think so!

Does everything have to be a freakin' Energy Drink!? NO! Coca-Cola always showed up...before Gatorade arrived...

The drink was first sold in Waco, Texas in 1885. It was introduced nationally in the United States at the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition as a new kind of cola, made with 23 flavors. The exact date of Dr Pepper's conception is unknown, but the U.S. Patent Office recognizes December 1, 1885 as the first time Dr Pepper was served. It then became the first carbonated soft drink (Coca-Cola came a year later).


OH! the FIRST! Wow, just like this is the first major soda company to sponsore the MAJOR LEAGUE GAMING!? How Ironic and approriate for such an occasion!

I'm not talking about sodas. I'm saying that you are wrong in saying MLG was the first when in fact CPL is the first. MLG came about in 2002. CPL came about in 1997.
 
I don't see this as surprising. Gaming in general is not a "physical" sport. So anything can be the official drink. Not to mention that Dr. Pepper is oh so tasty. :D
