DS Hands On Impressions!!

Most of the games at the show immediately booted to the game that was plugged into the unit; only the units demoing PictoChat showed off the nifty menu system that allows players to name their system, set the date and time, input their birthday, and other options like set the system to download a file wirelessly from any source that can send a DS-compatible file. This will be used for multiplayer, single-cartridge games, but it can also be used for other features like receiving demos from kiosks...the possibilities are endless.

You get to name your DS? That's kind of interesting.

Hehe a few names come to mind if you can name it.............Hey Mai, thank you for posting all this DS stuff :), anything I can know about it will help me decide if I should get it....I'm sure I will get it but it's still nice to know as much about a console as you can...

I got to play the DS at Circuit City today. Honestly, I am not impressed so far. Granted, it was only for a few minutes, but I have several complaints.

1. The screens are smaller than what I thought they would be. Viewing 3d on a screen that small is kinda awkward, and the only way you would really understand is if you were there to see it. At least Metroid was kinda strange on a handheld device.

2. The controls suck. In metroid, you move left, forward, back, and right with both side controls and use the touch-pad to turn. It is very cumbersome! The only thing that could fix this for me, and maybe you can do this, is to be able to use one control pad for one sec of movents and the other control pad for the others, and not use the touch-screen at all.

3. Meh. I don't know...I do not like the FPS games on it so far. I can see how Zelda or Mario might be fun, but I just do not like the control scheme at all. From what I could tell, there are no A or B buttons. There are two directions pads and a touch screen and that is it.

Verdict: I would not buy this without trying it out first. I am not against the system yet. I have not had enough time with it, BUT it is incredibly wierd and different than any system I have ever used. Make sure you know what you get into before putting the money down. On the bright side, it definitely could not be as bad as the virtual boy.

Winter, I read in my NP today that the Metroid demo (as well as the full version) will have 8 different control options... that should help :)

I got to play it for a few minutes the other day. I noticed (other than the screwy controls like Winter said) was that the graphics seemed to be better than what I've seen in pictures. Maybe it was just me...but they sure look a lot better than I expected.

Yeah, I'll second that statement. Metroid sure did look nice on that.

I played about 20 seconds of a multiplayer game at the mall last night. Seemed to load very quickly and w/out any lag. If I could have had a better control layout, I might've been able to actually shoot my brother :D

he heh... the system is cool!

It looks better graphically than I thought!

pretty nice :)

and everything (gameplay) reacts pretty well.
I only have the demo and super mario 64 DS.... but its still pretty cool :)

sorry... double post.. but um.... man this system and play SM64.... it brings back some wicked N64 day memories :D I love that.

PILOT WINGS... PLEASE PORT IT!!!

:lol it looks like a snot bubble IMO :lol :lol

I love the small cartridges for the DS.....

I am glad they still have held on to the cartridge based system handheld... instead of going disc based.

Yeah... there are cool things with disc based... but no loading = my friend. Even if there is small amounts of load.... no loading = my friend.

ok... I am a fan of a heavy loading system, the neo geo cd... and I can take the loads no problem.... but the system is nearly 10 years old.
IMO loads on newer systems are unacceptable..... at least long loads. I can take it better on consoles .... but handhelds... I want NO LOADS.

I think less than 1 inch by 1 inch

I can scan one in later :)

The carts come in COOL hard clamshell cases... NO MORE CARDBOARD BOXES :D

Yea I knew about those clamshell cases. I'm so glad they did that...I HATE those sorry excuses for boxes. Right now all my GBA games, instruction books, chargers, etc. are stuffed in a ziplock containter thingy...what a mess. I've yet to find something that can hold all my GBA stuff neatly (and securely) and have room for more *grumble*

The DS game carts are about the size of an SD memory card. Or a postage stamp. They are really small and cute. I like them.  :)
well... I think they are small and cool.... not cute :lol j/k mai.

I am happy that Nintendo stayed with carts. I just wish they could hold more info to compete with discs, you know?
