E74 Error

My roomate's Xbox went down last week. Not Three Red Rings, just one, which is far worse. We've been reduced to playing through N64 games again, games about a decade old now. Its quite surreal.

Just thought I'd vie for some sympathy.

My roommate is playing through Majora's Mask again, and remembering the sequence of events to get masks/beat temples is actually quite a bit of fun. It's also quite neat how all your actions are, more or less, futile. They matter to you, but any good you do in the game is "erased" whenever you save the game. Conceptually its a really interesting idea.

I'm attempting to do the three heart challenge in OOT. The hardest part is avoiding treasure chests and sidequests that result in heart pieces. I'm so trained to walk into an area an automatically look for secrets, but now I have to actively ignore anything that might result in a heart piece. That's fun as well.


Still, I had the option of playing these games before, when my roommate's 360 was working, and I chose not to, because I've played these games many times before. Mostly, I just miss Civ Rev, and NHL 09, and being able to play RE5 would be awesome (though I do get to play it at a friend's house).

Stupid Microsoft.
 
One of my friends got that error too, it was irritating cause I kept tellin her to send it in, but she kept waiting on it. :lol It was still under warranty! I don't know why she wouldn't just send it in! It took her a month of me pestering her to do it. :lol

well there are some actions that are not really futile, some things that not even the flow of time can erase, and that's what i loved about Majora's Mask, the total control of time and the people and world around link.

good luck with the 3 heart challenged, i did that with Majora's Mask and Twilight princess (though i kinda cheated in MM because i got the fairies in the temples that give resistance)

I remember, as Christmas approached, my roommate and I specifically avoided downloading the NXE, fearing it would brick the system. I posted about our seemingly irrational fear here. And now, it seems were right to fear any system upgrade. Sweet fancy Moses, like, seriously Microsoft, wtf!? Are they trying to come out with the buggiest upgrades imaginable? Because at this point it's hard to believe this kind of stuff happens by chance 100% of the time.
 
Yup. E74 was an nonexistent error until after the NXE. My friend had his repaired recently.

Was it possible to skip the NXE and still have Live? Or did you have to upgrade?

Most people were forced to, it does give you the option to say no, but now that they are sneaking the NXE with every newer game it seems. It's going to be harder to avoid.
 
MICROSOFT ARE ********** ARGH!!!! I know there's plenty of errors out there that can jolt up randomly, but this is sounding like a reacuring symptom, which I'm not pleased about since soon enough I'll finally be joining the LIVE community. Not exactly enjoying the idea of having to fork out more than $100 just to repair a fault that Microsoft is responsible for.

I should go down and slap their faces red. (next console, not Microsoft... remind me of that in case I forget)

Well, you know what I mean. :p Yeah, it /existed/... but it wasn't an "epidemic" until the NXE.

Rejoice my fellow 360 owners, the 3 year warranty now covers E74 errors now! Plus refunds to be issued!

It's been a difficult time for you, we know. While all your friends were getting the radical Red Ring of Death and happily cashing in on Microsoft's three-year Xbox 360 warranty, you had to make do with a decidedly less impressive (though equally cataclysmic) hardware failure, one that couldn't even manage to spit out more than a few crimson lights.

But your lonely torment is at an end, with Microsoft ceasing its defection discrimination and revealing via the Xbox Support page that the mysterious E74 error is now covered by the RROD's three-year warranty. Microsoft has determined "that the E74 error message can indicate the general hardware failure that is associated with three flashing red lights error on the console," and will "refund to customers the amount paid for an out of warranty repair due to a general hardware failure associated with the e74 error message." If you don't automatically receive this refund by July 1, 2009, you'll need to claim one through xbox.com/support before November 1, 2009.

That's awesome. I figured if we held out long enough this might happen.

Hilariously, we found out that every once in awhile the system will actually turn on. There's nothing actually wrong with the graphics processor, there's just some hiccup between the dashboard and the hardware that sometimes makes it think there's something wrong with the GPU. So, any time we're lucky enough to hit the button and see the lights come on, we leave it on for a couple days and play it until we're brave enough to risk our luck the next time we want to play it.

Sweet though.

Until you beat the game, everything you do is "undone" when you save/travel back in time... at least I thought so. What action can you perform that is not erased by the flow of time?
 
Saving money to the bank is the only thing not effected by time in Majora's Mask I think?

Wait, why are we talking about Zelda in the 360 section?! :lol
