EGM and Play reviews of Lair

EGM
6.0, 5.5, 5.0 (ouch)

Crispin says the combat system is confusing, and the Sixaxis controls don't always work the way they should. Lock-on system is also jacked.

Greg Ford says the camera is frustrating in ground combat. The wide open levels hold a lot of potential but ultimately don't deliver.

Garnett says it's a "frustrating disappointment" with a few bright spots.

Play
9.0

+ A new high-water mark for next-gen graphics and sound
- Confusing navigation and poorly explained objectives

I think I'll be trusting EGM, rather than play magazine (Sonic the Hedgehog for the 360 was runner up for their goty last year :o :o). That suks that it isn't that good. I wasn't expeting something great, but 5/10. *shudders*

I'm taking it you're mostly a follower then Cherry. :lol
No. I trust some reviewers, and EGM is one of them. Usually, if they say a game is bad, it is. I have a limited amount of money to spend on games, and I'm not gonna buy something if all the reviewers say it bad. I suppose not buying every game out there makes me a follower. ::)

Plus, if I was a follower, why wouldn't I like Halo?

Well not liking Halo is what all the "cool" kids do now. But aside from that, everyone has a different opinion. The game's not even out yet. It's been pushed back. How can you honestly tell me EGM is right if the game's not even out. Maybe the developers are fixing the problem in the game. Usually, if I say a game is bad, it is...IN MY OPINION. Honestly now.... :lol

:lol Idk where you got that from. I honestly can't think of anyone I know who was even slightly disappointed with the game.

Anyways, I don't think negative reviews are a good sign. Reviewers usually know what they're talking about, so I'm probably gonna trust what they say...

More from EGM.

The good: Graphics, the sea-snake boss

The bad: Confusing gameplay, the final boss is...a building?

Listen up, rich av buffs: Lair supports 7.1 HDMI receivers

Did they complain alot about this game compared to lair? i think not....lair is probably a great game in the eyes of other but egm is just harsh...

They didn't really explain it, so I don't know. Here are the full reviews.

Crispin: (6.0)
As you'd expect of a fantasy-flight sim brimming with volcanic vistas and foreboding cumuli swarming with winged reptiles--and all from the tech-Jedi developers of the Rogue Squadron (N64/GC) series--Lair fills you with swoony wonder. Unfortunately, it'll also make you wonder what the hell's going on. Because along with the clash-of-thousands battles and Peter Jackson-esque production values comes strictly nonstick motion control and a confounding combat system.

I overshot targets too many times because my dragon mount boosted forward instead of looping back when I jerked the Sixaxis. The lock-on system often sent my beast in random directions when I sought a special kill. Even the frequent midmission cinemas left me disorientated.

Buy this game if you want to justify all the thousands you spent on your PS3 and that 1080p HDTV you can see from orbit. Don't buy it if you want a dragon that does what it's told.

G. Ford (5.5)
Yeah, it's funny that even with all these technological wonders around, Lair still feels like it's trapped in a cave. It's not just the air-based combat that'll make you want to send your controller into actual flight, though. The more traditional claws-to-the-earth, analog-stick-controlled button-mashing ground skirmishes are an unsatisfying struggle with the camera. You'll likely find it easier to hover and use strafing runs to wipe out foot soldiers. Lair's potential creeps through in wide-open levels, where the margin of error is more forgiving and you feel like a dragon-mounted BA...but that's not a regular occurrence.

Garnett (5.0)
Oh, I swooned all right--like a first-year med student the first time they cut open a cadaver. Free to create an original project, how does Factor 5 wind up building a cliche-riddled Lord of the Rings reinterpretation of its Star Wars games? At least those titles had a radar; Lair's single guide arrow makes trying to find the next objective, much less managing multipart missions, an exercise in futility. Some battles offer a few "wow" moments, but those only punctuate an otherwise frustrating disappointment.
