August 16, 2007 - On Wii's Everybody Votes Channel, Nintendo asked in a worldwide poll, "Is the TV you are watching now a widescreen TV?" After more than 10 days of tallying votes, the results are in and it appears that Wii users are split practically right down the middle on the subject.
Approximately 48.8 percent of those tallied said yes, they are using a widescreen TV with Wii. The remaining 51.2 percent said no, they are using something different.
The majority of widescreen televisions today are inherently high-definition (720p, 1080i or up resolution) ready. Indeed, only a miniscule number of non-HD 16:9 sets have been produced since their inception. Bearing that in mind, it would seem that nearly half of Wii users today own HD sets, a significant figure given that Wii itself does not display games in high-definition. It is also important to remember that the number is only going to increase in the coming months and years.
The Everybody Votes Channel further broke down the demographics. According to the poll results, the majority of widescreen TV / Wii users reside in the UK (where nearly three quarters of votes said yes), Finland and Japan. More than half of American voters indicated that they do not play Wii on a 16:9 television. Nearly three quarters of Guatemalan voters do not own 16:9 TVs, which put the region at the bottom of the list of early adopters.
