F.E.A.R

Boom-shacka-lacka
After getting my brand spanking new gaming PC, which as of now, only needs another 512 MB of RAM, I recently got F.E.A.R to try it out.

For starters, this is mainly for those extremely top of the line computers. Even with my Geforce 6600 LE, I can't max out anything, most is at medium or minimum for graphics.

Anyways, I decided this game would be my kick off for me delving into PC gaming, and so far, this game is amazing. However I know it will take awhile.

Why?

Because I'm a pansy when it comes to horror stuff type games, and one of the main characters is reminiscient of our wonderful little lady from "The Ring".

This game isn't Doom 3 scary, it's not jump/pop out "boo" scary, it's more intense and suspensful. Yes, there are some "boo" moments, but they aren't half-bad. The game mainly keeps you wondering what the hell is around the next corner, and leaves you hoping she's not around it. I'm only a little ways into the game, and it's freaky as is.

As for more technical areas, the games enemy AI is top-notch. They run for cover. They hide. The throw grenades and make contact with them 90% of the time. As in "click-click" oh ****. I'm surprised ESRB didn't rate this game higer for the gore in it. People look like they've been cut across the stomach with shotguns, and a well place grenade leaves body parts strewn about.

So, has anybody else played this yet?

Yes. This game is amazing. Haven't gotten to the end (which I heard sucked) yet, but I plan to get there soon. IT runs pretty nicely on my friend's computer, but he also has a nice graphics card. Mine's only a 9800XT, so this game doesn't run too swell on 800x600.

Like I said, I got a GeForce 6600 LE. I'm not sure how it stands against other high end cards, but apparently this one is fairly cheap.

Yeah, but the 6600 is still an ok card. Its what they use for dual cards, but a 6800 GT is still better than dual 6600s. Go figure.

Geez, am I one of the few with this game now? I now have this and Quake 4, but until my new video card comes in (I got an ATI X850 Pro), framerate pretty much sucks.

Yeah, because that's only $1500 :p

I plan to wait until February when the 7800GS releases for AGP, then I'll buy one of those and see how everything runs. The upgrade is 97% for Oblivion, 3% ever other game.

i took the demo out for a spin :lol

i have a gig of ram and a radeon X800 pro

and the game still had some terrible framerate issues :'(

To tell you the truth, I didn't pay attention to the story. I pulled a run and gun throughout most of the game, and plan to replay so I know what's going on.

That will happen next month though, after I get my new graphics card.

F.E.A.R

First Encounter Assualt Recon

Pretty much it's a unit that was created in 2002 by the U.S. Government to deal with supernatural stuff. Anyway, this Hannibal Lecter type of guy named Paxton Fettal has some sort of psychic telepathic abilities, and takes control of a bunch of Replica "supersoldiers". Your job is to hunt him down and kill him, shutting down the soldiers, whom don't think for themselves and need a commander.

Not much else to say without spoiling much more of the story.

Got my X850 Pro, but my game seems to be stuttering alot now... Really annoying...

Thank you for the synopsis :)

Nova, make sure your drivers are up-to-date.

That card should run the game amazingly well.

I ordered my 7800 GS this morning, so I'll take screenshots of how everything looks once the card is shipped and installed (which will probably be after the 12th as it officially releases on Monday [when it will probably ship], but I leave for Canada the night of the 8th and return the morning of the 12th. I will probably need a power supply as well, so if I don't order one now, it will be a few days after the 12th before everything is all set up and ready.)

Nah, it's not my drivers. I have the latest Catalyst drivers for the Radeons. I'm actually short on RAM. It turns out the game needs around a good 800 MB. Now I have a full Gigabyte of RAM, but a bunch of it is used to actually keep the program running, so technically the games only getting 700 MB of it, or something to that matter. I know it's my RAM, because I even turned down both settings to minimum, and it still stuttered (with a constant 100+ framerate).

I'm gonna have to find a way to sell my old video card and 2 sticks of 512 RAM, and get two sticks of 1 GB.

I'm glad there's a V-sync though, because the mild shortage of RAM is causeing the game to stutter, which in turn causes a little tearing in some moments.

Yeah, RAM usually helps. I have 2GB and love it, though I actually could have used more at one point. Photoshop was trying to use more than 2GB of RAM with my one project.
