Judge sentences gamer to death
20-year-old who used Grand Theft Auto as defense for triple homicide sentenced to lethal injection.

Earlier this year, Devin Moore, now 20, was on trial for the 2003 triple homicide of three Alabama policemen. While in detention for stealing a car, Moore grabbed the pistol of one officer and used it to fatally shoot a total of three of them.

The defense mounted a case based on a childhood full of mental and physical abuse, as well as an affinity for violent games. One game in particular, Rockstar Games' Grand Theft Auto III, was singled out, because gamers can steal cars and kill cops in it. Moore had said he was inspired by the PlayStation 2 game.

In August, a jury swiftly convicted Moore of the charges. And today, a judge laid down the most severe punishment the justice system allows.

Moore will be put to death by lethal injection. Defense attorney Jim Standridge will appeal the case.

The victims' families have sued Take-Two Interactive (parent company of Rockstar), Sony, Wal-Mart, and GameStop for their parts in the manufacturing and selling of the game.

He deserves the death penalty, but only because he was stupid enough to actually say that GTA 3 influenced him. A game alone wont make you a serial killer.

Im glad they gave him death

if the jury would have bought his video game defence every killer would start claiming that video games made them do it

Once again it proves that video games don't make killers.

Yanno, once there was a guy up for murder who tried to say he was not guilty because he ate too many Twinkies. Judge and jury ddin't buy it.

I remember that incident, its pretty pathetic that people do these things and blame it on something else for their actions. I bet he had planned this out before all of this happened, thinking he would just go to some crazy hospital or something, sucks for him. He's being killed over a video game! :-\

I think he deserved it, he's a monkey for blaming it on a video game...that's like pushing your brother down the stairs and blaming the cat....just plain stupid!

^I got away with it. You just have to be convincing... :D

But seriously, that guy does deserve death. If someone's that deranged, there's obviously an underlying problem that's more severe than a simple video game.

guys/gals.... seriously..... WHAT IF games actually did cause some people to go over the edge and not care as much due to desensitization..

I have always been AGAINST the Video Game argument.... but there are some truths behind violent video games causing desensitization to violence.

Now, I am not saying this is an excuse, but what if it is a contributing factor?

*Games are not a scapegoat. My official stance on games is that they are good for you in moderation. In fact, I make sure my kids get to play games, as well as read, and do those things that are good for them. Playing games do exercise a different part of your brain than does reading and other activities. It is actually good to get gaming in your daily diet.

Desensitizing. Video games do it. But people always look at the bad side to it.

say your with someone who gets seriously hurt if your desensitized to blood and graphic stuff like that you wont flip out and panic. Yet if your not desensitized then you more than likely would be so freaked out you wouldnt be able to think rationally and get help or do anything helpful.

It might not sound the way I want it to but I hope I got my point across.

But I think there is something much deeper inside someone's mind in order to commit crimes. If it's not video games then it's movies that are the problem. If not movies then the news or anything that has violence in it.

yes yes, I agree :) I just meant that maybe Video Games could be part of the cause... not the entire.

Man... there are certainly some nasty and retarded movies out there.

My guess is that he was thinking he could get away with the same deal that one could try in GTA. Only in GTA it doesn't matter how many people you kill, how many cars you blow up, or how many laws you break. You only spend a half-day in prison. If you die, you pop out of the hospital a few hours later $1000 short. This guy isn't going to appear out of either.

I blame this one on him and the parents though. It's possible he was influenced by the game, but he stole a car. If you didn't raise your kid good enough to let him know that he did something wrong, that's your bad. If your conscious isn't strong enough to stop you from doing something wrong, perhaps you need some mental help.
