GOD HATES NERDS!? Excuse me!? O.o

Segatron Genesis... call me the wizard.
Are you attending the San Diego Comic Convention next week, or do you wish you could? Then your soul will burn in hell for all eternity -- at least according to the insane congregants of the Westboro Baptist Church. Led by Reverend Fred Phelps, the church will actually take the time to protest SDCC from 1:15 to 2pm on Thursday the 22nd. Why? I'll let this quote from Phelps explain:

"Are you kidding?! If these people would spend even some of the energy that they spend on these comic books, reading the Bible, well no high hopes here. They have turned comic book characters into idols, and worship them they do! Isaiah 2:8 Their land also is full of idols; they worship the work of their own hands, that which their own fingers have made: 9 And the mean man boweth down, and the great man humbleth himself: therefore forgive them not. It is time to put away the silly vanities and turn to God like you mean it. The destruction of this nation is imminent - so start calling on Batman and Superman now, see if they can pull you from the mess that you have created with all your silly idolatry."

Because, as we all know you can not dress as a comic book character, buy a toy of a comic book character, or read a story about a comic book character without worshiping that character as a god. It's an impossibility to enjoy fiction without believing those characters are the creators of the universe which we must acknowledge through prayer and worship (I remember the time I was young and watching Sesame Street, and killed my pet rabbit in the name of Super Grover. Kids sacrifice the darnedest things!).

I'm not trying to diss all religion here, but there are so many real problems in the world I find acts of zealotry like these phenomenally stupid and awful. Plus, the fact that this is such a grave evil they're going to spend 45 whole minutes on Comi-con's least busy day is especially infuriating. Thanks to Nerd punks for both the tip and the pic.

Well I spoke with God and he said unto me, "Dude, I made you in my own image like everyone of your friends. Btw, Halo Reach and Resistance 3 rock. Much Love, God."

He killed his pet rabbit because of some character on sesame street? and now he is saying that if your a nerd you will burn in hell pfft this guy is the very definition of crazy

Phelps and his followers are well known as extremists and hatemongers. The best way to handle them is to ignore them. :P

No no, the thing about sacrificing a rabbit was sarcasm by the guy who wrote the article.

Oh -facepalm- don't mind me ive been feeling like crap the last couple days so i haven't really been thinking straight.

If their goal is to bring people to God (and I'm not entirely sure this particular "church" is too concerned with that) then they might be better off showing the parallel's between self-sacrificial superheroes like Superman and Batman and Jesus. Batman's a bit of a tough sell, what with the whole revenge thing, but Superman and Jesus have a lot in common when you think about it. Both are superior to human beings, both come from other worlds - so to speak - and both seem overly concerned with saving human beings from themselves, even at the cost of their own life. I think they should try and work that angle, instead of the doom and gloom self-appointed judges of humanity.

I can appreciate where they're coming from (the notion of "idolatry" is one of the most divisive concepts amongst Christians, Muslims, and Jews), even though I don't personally agree, but they're methods are certainly strange.

I wonder what they think they're going to accomplish, aside from self-satisfaction and some media attention.

QFT. :D

There was an anthropologist named Claude Levi-Strauss who studied myth comparatively across cultures. The comparisons you just made, Stealth, are ones that occur through numerous cultures as a similar figure... For example, the Greeks had Heracles (Roman Hercules) who was born of a human woman and a god as a father (Zeus/Jupiter) and had supernatural traits.

Of course, that is just a Greek/Roman example, but a similar figure appears in numerous myths around the world... If every myth is broken to a bare structure, then compared between figures and events in other cultures, the majority of modern storytelling is just a revamp of myths with histories on the order of thousands of years old...

If anyone wants to read more about it, Levi-Strauss wrote an extended mythology comparison spanning four volumes...

Here's some more info on the man himself... By the way, R.I.P... He passed away last year.

Wurd. I actually studied Strauss and Structuralism for a time. Pretty fascinating stuff. His four volume myth comparison basically said that the purpose of all myth, religion, storytelling, and narrative is to assert one binary opposition; the difference between human beings and animals. I disagree with that analysis, but it's definitely a theory that holds some weight.

But indeed, Strauss makes it clear why there is almost no such thing as an "original" or "new" story. All the movies, TV shows, and comic books we see are essentially the Bible, Oedipus Rex, The Iliad/Odyssey, The Mahabharata, Gilgamesh, Tale of Genji, Shakespeare, and so forth with modern implants.

Good observation. We should discuss this in greater detail some time. I propose beginning a club of finer things, a Finer Things Club.

Westboro Baptist Church.... ::)

They're a bunch of attention hungry people using their twisted form of religion to gather media attention. Will they ever stop ranting on or are they just being a bunch of Mel Gibsons?

I should also add only half of this statement was truly serious.

hahahaha, love this line, and will do!

Well it's better that Phelps is protesting a comic book convetion rather then a soldier's funeral like he has done in the past. That's what you have realize about Phelp's him and his congeration they're crazy and very hateful also keep in mind Phelp's church may call itself Baptist but it's a nondemonational and the membership is mostly related to Phelphs by either blood or mariage.
Also because of the actions of WBC 17 states and federal government now have law restricting protests at funerals.
