Happy Columbus Day

Sadly most of Texas does not acknowledge this. Plus don't forget it was Canadian Thanksgiving yesterday as well.

Yeah it's a useless holiday here in Arizona. The government agencies get the day off. As well as the trolls down at the Motor Vehicles Divison.
But I have always wanted to know why Columbus got a holiday when it was Amerigo Vespucci who actually "discovered" the New World for the Europeans...  :?

Actually it was Erik the Red who discovered it, yet yours is more accurate. He called it "Green Land" in hopes that it would be a beautiful place, when really it was a big ice berg lol

Now as for Columbus, he didnt discover America...he discovered Canada...so pretty much "North America" if you wanted to say.

True. It was the Vikings who came over here first. As for Columbus, I was always told that he discovered the West Indies. Mainly the islands south of Cuba.

That I don't know. I just know that the New World was named after him. It could be that he made the first maps, or did indeed come here. It was my assumption that he came over here...

Yeah well considering the way the indians were treated it wouldnt surprise me if the Europeans just totally disregarded the name that person gave it and still name it America.

I agree. But such is life with human history. A history of conquer and subdue the weaker societies and either let them assimilate or let them die. Hopefully our civilization has come to the point of realizing that doing such things is not really a good idea.
I think it would be interesting to know if such a name existed for this continent long before European influence came here.

Im sure there was. I always wonder what the Native Americans called this land. Im sure each tribe probably had a different name.
