My friend got a ps3 to hook up to his 32" HD Vizio with surround sound. he went to wal mart and picked up the HD hook up ( i don't know which one but it did cost $40)
When you turn on the ps3 with the hd connector it says "An HDMI device has been found would you like to use it?" and if you click yes then it goes to a black screen and doesn't come back on. Any idea on how to get it to work? The surround sound works great just can't get the HD to work
 
There is a switch on the cord itself that reads "TV/HDTV."

Flip it to "HDTV."

EDIT - Sorry, that's not the solution. I thought this was in the Xbox 360 forum.
 
Okay here's what you do. If you are prompt with that "Yes or No" question. It should automatically go into HDMI signal.

Also, is the AV or Component cable still connected to the PS3? If so, disconnect it. It will confuse the PS3 if it's still inside there. The HDMI will take care of the sound and picture.

Now, hold down the power button for 5 SECONDS. If you hear TWO BEEPS it will automatically reset the video settings...and then turn it on again. Select "Yes" and wait a while for it to configure the video settings.

If it doesn't work the first time, keep trying the last step I just said again.

He has the HD cable running from the PS3 to the TV and the sound component cable ( yellow i guess ) is running to his surround sound which is running to his TV. The picture component cables are not hooked up at all. Will the surround sound still work with just the HD cable hooked up?

LOL.. I actually switched my 360 to HDTV one time by accident and when the picture wouldn't show up i was like WTF? i didn't know what was wrong with it. So i kept playing with it and it gave me three red rings and i was about 2 seconds from sending it back when i noticed the TV/HDTV switch on the cord.
