Yeah I am new here, so hi everyone. I have a couple questions

Why cant we upload your own avatar? why are sig's only one character long?

Ask BV. He runs the place.
I was told that with the avatars, it keeps the site clean. That way nobody can make any potentially offensive avatars.
I don't know about the sig thing.

well.... the avatar issue is because we store the avatars locally.

Now... we do it this way to ensure what is being saved on the webserver follow the rules and that they are clean files... IE no viruses or what not (yes, viruses can be added into imageS).


As for sigs... I am trying to get them disabled totally.  This is not a popular option, BUT when we were on our last board.... they got ridiculous.  Even at the smallest size, it caused loading problems for people on 56K AND lower modems.  So we disabled them... and it GREATLY improved the loading times... and thats why we stick to it.  Everything I (or we develop.. somethings the members help with some sections)  develop regarding the site has load times in mind.  We want to make things friendly for 56K users as well as broadband.

no problem at all :)  we are pretty loose here... we don't care if old topics are brought up..etc...   We are  a little more strict rule wise to keep things safe for viewing in front of the family and at work.  It is pretty fun here though.

Just go to the link BV provided and you can give him the picture you want as an avatar. If it follows the rules he'll tell you he posted it and then you can change avatars. All of the avatars Ive had are ones that I picked.

Well if it has your name on it I doubt anybody else would want to use it. It would become available to everybody on the board though.

actually.... once you display yours anyway, someone could right click --> save image as .... and just use it for themselves.

Unfortunately, no .... I probably won't have remotely choosen avatars..etc.

I will be glad to upload it for you :)

Also, most people do not stick with a single avatar more than a couple months. After that, people here normallly choose a different one.
I think we have around 641 selectable avatars now.

You should set up some rules involving sigs then. Like, Gamefaqs 2 lines 180 characters rule. No images.
 
But then we would have to filter through everyones 180 Characters....
Dont feel bad I asked all these same questions on sigs and avatars and titles. ;)

I just changed mine today for the first time.

I don't mind sigs that much either... It's just when they get ridiculously huge is when it bugs me.
 
Yeah sigs are good for one-line quotes and junk. I'd probably quote some stupid thing from Ralph Wiggum. But they get mundane when someone quotes a whole scene from Macbeth or something.
 
I think the limits on sigs are obscenely extreme. Just make it text only with a line limit. I seriously have never seen a sig with a whole scene from MacBeth. I know the sig limit is for 56ker's, but I highly doubt it would make a huge impact on their browsing. Or, you could make it so a person's sig only appears once per page, I've seen sites that do that.

Ive seen plenty of sigs that are just insane. But I also agree that a line or two of text wont hurt those poor 56ker's.

I too have never seen a whole scene from Macbeth either. I was just going a bit extreme on an example. But I am in agreement that sigs should be limited to about a line or two. And having text won't slow down the "poor" 56kers. I know, cuz I am one!! :D
