It's not looking good, guys

Play magazine, which normally is very pro-Nintendo, likes the PSP over the DS. This is the same issue in which the Legend of Zelda trailer won Best of Show for E3. A TRAILER won Best of Show. Over Halo 2, Doom 3, Half-Life 2, and everything else there. So these guys are Nintendo fans, to be sure.

So I'm kind of left wondering....

Am I just blinded by my Nintendo fangirl-ism? (Neph, don't answer that one. I know what you would say.  :p ) Is the PSP really going to be the future of gaming? Are we really just going to be going faster down all the same roads instead of going to new places?* Is that really what people want? Is having great graphics and an analog stick going to do more for handheld gaming than two screens and a touch panel? Are these people still going to be so excited about the PSP when the price and battery life are officially announced? Or when it starts having dirty disc errors thanks to  the combination of Sony's typically shoddy hardware and using disc based media? Or when the DS gets awesome Nintendo franchises?

I guess it doesn't really matter what other people think about the DS, though. What matters to me is what I think, and what I think is that the DS is going to be awesome.

*Adapted from Reggie's quote "Do you want to go just a little faster down the same streets you've always driven? Or down a new road to places you've never seen before?"

Or the fact that Sony is new to the handheld market. But it doesn't matter what anyone thinks yet, not until the games have been played and the opinions formed from that come in (not to mention sales figures).

Still, for $300, the PSP better be great. I wouldn't even buy a console for that much. :-\

I think what would turn me away from the PSP is the moving parts in a sonyhandheld.

I mean, we all know their service reputations... and that is scary in a handheld.

do you all really think the Nintendo DS is going to fail?

Maybe this will be Nintendo's undoing? Maybe not... we'll all see.

But until then, support the companies you love :D

I don't think either will fail. There's enough people interested in the DS.

I think I was more disappointed that it was coming from Play than anything else. It would be like if PSM or OPM said that the PSP sucked...you would be all like :o right? That's kind of what it was.

I still think the DS is going to be awesome, and I intend to pay off my pre-order before it comes out so that I can pick it up right away on launch day. :)

I'm not worried about that. If they can make minidisk players with moving parts that don't skip if you throw it against a wall while jumping on a trampoline, I don't think we'll have to worry with the PSP ( I can see it now - WARNING: DO NOT THROW YOUR HANDHELD GAMING CONSOLE AGAINST A WALL. IT MAY CAUSE PERMANENT DAMAGE.)

Haha. I think we kinda figured, due to the love for Kirby. And I don't throw my minidsk player against the wall either, I was just proving a point that the moving parts probably won't be that much of a problem.

Sony IS ALWAYS hit or miss.

Beta - Miss
walkman/discman - hit
mini disk - miss (yes I know they were awesome but the public has pretty much not supported it at all)

so far ps1 and ps2 have been a massive success.......... so maybe it's time for sony to royally screw up again!

It takes memory to make it so they don't skip.

The song is loaded ahead in the memory.....
and then it plays as it loads....

BUT for a game to be loaded in memory.... that is sound, visuals..etc.... that would take a lot more memory than just a song I would believe.

IMO that would be harder to achieve.

Where have I been, I've never even heard of them. How much do they cost?

they have been out for years :lol
I'd say, getting close to 10 years ago for the 1st MD releases.  They just cost way TOOOOO much back then.
They are good for musicians though.... who use Minidisc recorders..... but then again, many people love the analog better than digital when recording music :-\

BUT back to the topic on hand :)  create a seperate Mini disc thred in the general discussion if you please  ;) :D

I've seen some of the app's the DS is supposed to have that use the touch screen and wireless networking, those look fun to me....but unless a lot of people have them, it's not gonna be that great. It's like text-messaging meets
etch-a-sketch....
The graphics on the DS look pretty good, I just hope the games are as fun as they look.

That's probably because Sony are infamous for shoddy quality. Nintendo aren't, and I trust they'll fix up the problems for the DS before it hits stores.

I just find it funny that you're saying that the Sony machines are going to fall apart on the one hand, yet don't say anything about potential problems with the DS

Like what?

The only thing I am worried about is the touch screen. It would be easy to scratch using the stylus all the time. But Nintendo is working on that, so I'm not too worried. Also, the clamshell design is going to protect it when you're not using it. The PSP doesn't have a built in cover for its screen...you have to buy that separate. ::)

The DS still uses carts as opposed to optical media, so there's no lens to worry about it quitting on you like the PS2s are famous for.
