I picked up this game for 20 dollars at ebgames. It comes with Kings Quest 1-7, and all of the best versions. Ie. Kings Quest 1 is the remake and Kings Quest 5 is the CD version. The product comes without any hardcopy manuals. In the box is two CDs, and a small slip of paper detailing instructions on installation.
Now here comes a bit of a shock, when installation begins, there is a prompt to install Dosbox. The shocking part of this to me is that I have never found Dosbox to be all that great. I was honestly expecting sierra to do a complete recoding of these games for the compilation version. Instead, we get Dosbox. On the other hand, fans of the originals can feel confident they are getting the original source code, and exact gameplay.
Installation was mildly annoying because the autoplay feature did not work. You have to use a workaround by going into the CD files and double clicking setup.exe.
Once the package was actually installed, and I clicked the icon on my desktop (the CD's are no longer required at this point), I was pleasantly surprised. A very nice menu pops up on screen. It lists a button for every game, a button for the manual (which you need to get past copyright protections), and a picture of boxart. When you click on one of the buttons, that particular game is launched.
All the games play exactly like---Kings Quest! So if you liked the originals, you will love these. I never got to play the CD versions of Kings Quest V and VI, so for me this package was a must. As well as the fact that owning legal copies of all 7 games is a must for fans if you don't already own them.
My only complaint is I wish they would have done something more for this release. In the old days, Sierra always provided beautiful manuals with their products or really nice packaging. I would have liked maybe an art template, or a really nice manual, or maybe a making of art booklet, something that would commemorate re-releasing these games in 2006. I mean, I doubt these games will EVER be released twice, and these are my favorite games of all time. I would have been willing to pay more.
