So yeah, I finally moved out from Texas to Colorado. I got the internet connection set up today... and wanting to get on one of my favorites, I fired up Counter-Strike Source, only to come across something strange -- my latency was horrible!
Backtrack a bit... at my old house/using my old internet connection (SBC Global DSL, 2wire modem), I got about 1.5mbits dstream/388kb ustream. And it worked fantastically. I could get as low as 6 ping on some servers. Now I realize this is because there are a lot of Texas servers, but even so, I could ping to one of my favorite Colorado servers (hosted in Denver) and get about 38ms.
But now at this new house, I'm using Qwest as my provider. 2wire modem again, which is fine, but the speed is MUCH better. Using a bunch of bandwidth tests, I usually get about 5.9-6mbits dstream/600-744kbits ustream. Which, as you can guess, is obviously much faster than before.
See, that's the confusing thing -- better connection, better pinging in Steam, right? Guess not, apparently. Looking through the server list for all games, I'm not finding a single server under 90ms. Not even one. Remember that Colorado server that I was talking about? I get about 125ms ping there.
I know it's not my connection, because it's leaps and bounds higher than my old connection. What's wrong? Should I contact Steam? Anything I should do in terms of cleaning out my computer to make way for the new router, seeing as they are both 2wires (the Qwest one is a new model though)?
