Legalising Prescription Medication Just Because....Is Ridiculous

Hi Members,I hope this post finds y'all well.

Last week at chess I had a pretty interesting conversation with one of the other members with respect government control and pharmaceuticals.

Where I live, meds such as "Gravol"("Dramamine" U.S.) and "TY 1"are kept behind the counter and you must be 18 to purchase them, and you are restricted to 2 packages only. When he asked why,I told him that these particular drugs have been abused for their euphoric effect and that an overdose can be lethal, especially if mixed with alcohol and other meds.

He thinks those restrictions mentioned above are ridiculous,as well as the restrictions placed on prescription drugs of any kind. His argument is that alcohol kills people, and so do cigarettes, yet they're not restricted in any fashion other than age requirements to buy them.He feels that it's not fair to have these restrictions just because of those who have less self control than others who end up addicted to these drugs.

Personally, being a recovering addict along with the life I lead while using,I'm darn glad they have these restrictions. No one wakes up in the morning and decides that they're going to be an addict for the rest of their lives.Having a strong mental process doesn't mean that you are immune to becoming addicted to something.Contrary to popular belief,"Will Power" gets you on the road to recovery, but a great number of people with will power coming out their nose still relapse like any other.I think if this member's daughter ended up in the ER due to cardiac arrest after swallowing 6 or 7 morphine combined with other substances,he would think differently.

I drank HEAVY for many years. When I kicked,I was lucky. I only had minor liver problems no major gastrointestinal problems.Taking 30-40 Gravol every day for a year or two did far more damage than alcohol,i can't speak for others, just my experience.I know if people know the right people, prescription drugs can be bought on the street, but it's far more dangerous than most think.

If they did what this member of my chess club said and sold these powerful drugs otc,it would certainly cut down if not destroy street pill dealers, but it would also create more addicts, and cause current addicts more serious problems, especially if they are trying to kick.

Any thoughts?

Peace.
