Okay, so I bought this extended LE at BB the other day, but I open it and it's one of those god damn 90s double sided DVDs. I hate these things.

Now my question, was the original, extended release (6 cd sets I think) - were they double sided like this, too? For the extended versions?

If Im understanding it correctly than no they arent double sided. I got the Set that looks like a book and they are just three dvds.

No, no they were not. 4 discs per movie, 2 for the movie and 2 for the behind the scenes, not double sided.

I don't know what you have, but it smells of back-alley home brew.

It's something they just released via Best Buy the other day. Nice, big stand.. boxes are decent... but double sided CDs ?? No!

Man, I hate double sided discs.

um...
I really liked those old DVDs... crap... it was nice having widescreen on one side, and the normal on the second side...

Now if you want widescreen or normal, you have to buy 2 different DVDs.

Not sure why you don't like double sided dvds... UNLESS it was like movie 1 and 2 on a single disc... that would suck

You got it.

I've got to stop in the middle and flip the disc. Fuck that.

But I gather that with the old LEs I'd have to stop in the middle and put in another DVD..? Man. Sigh, maybe new gen video disc technology isn't such a bad idea. :-/. Not like many companies in United States make movies that long though...

Remember laser disks? Jurassic Park, Indiana Jones, etc on Laser where you had to get up and flip it or put another disk in.

eh... that sucks then. you got owned on that version :(

I like the double sided discs with standard on one side, and Widescreen on the other... WITH A FULL movie on both side... but crap... I am not flipping a disc to watch a movie... as lazy as that sounds... they need to figure something out. That is unacceptable. VERY VERY VERY unacceptable.

That's what.. gulp.. HD DVD and BluRay are for.. fuck!

I think I just saw those double sided ones at Sam's Club yesterday. I told my husband that I am so glad we got the regular set that comes in the super cool box, and has 4 discs per movie...two for each movie, and two for the behind the scenes stuff.

But the extended edition is awesome, isn't it? I mean there is Sooooo much extra stuff. Almost like having a whole 'nother movie's wort of stuff, if you put all the extra stuff from all three togethe.r

I haven't watched it yet. I was too busy bitching to my self.

But I will get around to it when I have a full day to devote to.. that sort of thing. :-)

You know, I have an extensive cassette library (I know, I should upgrade. Sometimes I think I am stuck in the 80s), and I have a lot of videos that are a two cassette set. And it's easier to pull out atape, and drop in part 2 than it is to open a DVD player and flip the disk over and start again.

Woah, VHS tapes still exist?

In my house they do. I have TWO cassette players too. And ONE DVD player (not counting my Xbox or PS).

I'm oldschool baby. 8)

Well, let us know what you think after you watch it all.

I am busy reading the books now, cuz I had not read them before. I just finished the Hobbit and started on the Fellowship of The Ring, and I am so glad I watched the movies first. It makes the books cooler.

Yes, those are the ones I have. I just saw the ones you were talking about the other day at HMV. In my opinion, you would have been better off getting the original spexial extended editions. These new ones just look quick and cheap, something that should never be associated with LOTR.

I think the Fellowship movie did justice to the book, but you're in for a real treat once you get to the Two Towers and Return of the King. PJ really messed things up by the third movie, so even though you "know" what happens from seeing the movie, there's so much difference between the two is will seem like you're reading a different story entirely (and a much better one at that).
