SEGA made the historic announcement this morning and confirmed that Mario & Sonic at the Olympics (as it's known) is due for release this Christmas. The game's currently in development by SEGA Japan and Shigeru Miyamoto is supervising the project. The title will be published by SEGA of America later this year.

Players compete in events around venues based on official locations for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. Featuring a supporting cast of recognizable faces from the world of both Sonic and Mario, players can choose from a range of characters including Luigi, Knuckles, Yoshi, and Tails. More characters will be announced at a future date.

Asked if it would be a mini-game fest of sorts, SEGA of America's VP of marketing, Scott Steinberg, had this to say: "No, I wouldn't characterize it as a mini-game [fest]. This will be an action-sports game in the Olympic spirit. The idea behind it is really to be an easy pick-up-and-play sports game where gamers of all ages can find it accessible. We see it as being very family-inclusive so my 11-year-old can play with a 75-year-old grandma and just have a blast with it."

I really loved Wii Sports, so this game, with Sonic and Mario characters (I wonder if Boo will make an appearance?) is really exciting news!
 
hm... I really.... really .... really don't know what to think :lol

I always thought the world would end when Sega and Nintendo joined forces (so-to-speak).

OMG!!!.... Long have I awaited the day when I could play as Mario and Sonic in the one game. AND NOW IT HAS ARRIVED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AWSOME!!! Now we can finally see which of the two classic, well known, and (I don't usualy say this) lovable hero's!
 
It's cool and is definitely big news, but I personally would have preferred a platformer. Who knows if this is successful maybe it will happen. I'm crossing my fingers.
 
Perhaps this will also mark the beginning of the end to the timeless debate of supremacy: Mario or Sonic?
 
I couldnt even imagine a platformer with the two, It would be totally amazing. I guess this is the first step, so im looking forward to it!

I'm going to find another offical page on this. It could be too early to look, but there may already be the offical exclusive game site created for this. Hmm...... may not find it though. I'll be back.

:'( goggle search failed me. The Title is too long to make for a specific search, so icouldn't find any exclusive sites for it. But I'll keep trying. But I don't think I'm going to find anything.
 
I can see it now, my NES and SMS frollicking hand in hand through a field of daisies... Like a bad 80s sitcom.

Mario running for rings, and Sonic grabbin' at coins...

Man I hope this game rocks harder than the hype it seems to be generating.
 
Blasphemy! Mario and Sonic, together in a game? I can't wait to see how this game turns out.
