Microphone Set-Up...Anyone?

I found a microphone ( a Sony F-V100) laying around my house (lucky me :lol ), and I had no idea what to do with it. So I go to my computer...plug it into the microphone jack....and nothing. It doesn't show that new hardware is installed or anything. I go to the device manager...and its not there. I tried running the add a new hardware device and it doesn't find it. From what I understand after googe-ing, its a relavtivley cheap microphone (around $10 most), and its no biggie if it won't work, but it will be nice to have. Keep in mind I found it in storage, and I have no software or anything, just an attachment for a larger microphone port (but this one seems to work fine). Anyone have any idea? :?

Your mic will not be "detected" by the computer. All you need is for your sound card to have been installed properly. Once you plug it into the mic jack, get some software to test it with, like the windows sound recorder, or some game that supports microphones. by default you will not hear yourself speaking from your speakers.

Make sure in your sound properties or volume control (under winxp: Programs -> accessories -> entertainment -> volume control) that the mic is not muted and that the volume is turned up.

I've noticed that a lot of times the mic is muted as a default setting... on some computers it is not.
