Need Help: Hard Drive

Well I want to get an External Hard Drive like 250GB-500GB because Im afraid of storing all my stuff on my main laptop hard drive (after it broke inside my computer somehow last year, I paid 80 for a new one that works beautifly but it was only 60GB).

Ive searched around but I want to know what is best because on several sites people lists new hard drive but that they failed anywhere between 3 months to 18 months, from your own understanding with any that youve had, have yours lasted longer than this period and been able to always work fast and efficiently, which should I look for, and I guess maximum cost of $150, USB powered, possibly portable-ish cause I want to also use it to connect to the PS3 (since i only have a 40GB drive on that, and I can easily follow the many FAQS and Do it yourselfs on getting the PS3 to recognize large external hard drives).

I've had my 500GB Western Digital Harddrive for almost 2 years now and it works like ti was brand new. And PS3's already recognize Western Digital or any other kind of externals just by plugging in the usb.
 
We have Western Digital TERRABYTE external HHDs at Wal*Mart. The first time I saw it I got totally jazzed and made everyone hold it, and was like "Guys this is what a TERRABYTE feels like. You are holding a TERRABYTE. Isn't that AWESOME~!?"
 
okay thats good there was an article that said it has to be in like the fat32 format for ps3 to automatically work wwith it so western digital is alright, which series?

The problem with getting the TB one, is that I will never be able to fill it. On my hard drive, all of my actual real stuff now just fills around 10GB...music is 4GB, and I always delete everrything else so it is just programs. So I would never be able to have about 975GB of material.
 
Yeah I am totally with you on that Starrynite. I am sure the day will come that we will be able to use a TB, but now is not that day.
 
Because I could at least utilize it for future downloads on the PS3. 500GB is enough space to work with for my general needs of using it for the PS3's needs and for using it for my school needs and music needs. With the 500GB costing just the same as some of the 250GB ones then might as well get more for the same price.
 
The brands I usually stick with are Seagate, Maxtor (which is the same as Seagate, since they were bought out by them) and like others have mentioned, Western Digital.

Just as a heads up external HD's usually have more problems than internal ones. That is unless you have a solid state external hard drive, like a thumb drive. If you can afford it, I would recommend buying a separate HD for your PS3. But if money is an issue then I would recommend an external hard drive from any one of the manufacturers I listed. They all have good warranties. In general though, externals should mostly be used primarily to back up data and not really be your main drive for storing important data.
 
Without a doubt don't buy anything but Seagate. I've been working with computers since the mid 90s and I've yet to find a better drive. Western Digital drivers aren't great and they don't stand behind them unless they are Raptors or enterprise drives. Maxtor isn't much better, but at least they stand behind their drives. Seagate drives have a five year warranty. I've only had one go bad on me and they upgraded the drive since they didn't make mine anymore. I also have a Packard Bell with a Seagate 1.2 gig drive. It was my first computer and the drive still works great. As far as customers systems go, I've had two fail, both were DOA. They were also replaced the next day.

The problem with external drives and laptop drive is shock. Granted laptop drives are designed to take more of a beating. If you're using this as a backup be very gentle with it. So, look at the Seagate Free Agent drives. They are external drives that use laptop drives.
 
Hm I guess I will go with Seagate, I like that 5 year warranty deal for sure, cause usually anything that isnt sony branded that I have has failed. Well my Dell USB Key has been bent up in so many places,Im shocked that it still works.

The hard would probably just be mainly used to move any music files I have to the PS3 and then left connected to the PS3 the most.
