Neo Geo CD Neo Geo CD 4x???

Hi everybody! This is my firs post here, and I immediately start with a question: I'vre read somewhere over the net that in Japan, after the Neo Geo CDZ, a newer system was released too, called Neo Geo CDX, which sported a 4x drive. Ever heard of this?

I really don't know if the site is trustworthy (I can't find it again, I'm sorry), since it states that the Neo Geo CDZ has a 2x drive, while we know it has the same 1x drive of the "regular" Neo Geo CD, but with bigger cache that reduces the loading needs.

while I have not heard of this.... I know people were saying that IF they had a faster drive it wouldn't matter due to the CD's being burned for 1x-2x or something like that.

I don't know if thats totally true either.

Another guy (at our old neogeocd.net boards) stated he made different modifications to his Neo CD and go it running with relatively no loads. We could never get proof of this though.

Hey! welcome to the boards :) Please enjoy your stay and hope to see you around :)

I've never heard of this at all...rumour or lie..pick one.

A 4x drive would not make any difference at any rate I'm pretty sure....like BV said.

More ram would though..at least in theory...

yeah..... they could load the entire game into ram.... and just reference ram :)

Thanks for the replies and the welcome! ;)

I recently "came back" to the Neo Geo world after a few years of pause; when I bought my Neo Geo CD almost 8 years ago I had nobody to talk about it! I'm happy to see there are other Neo Geo CD fans out there, all I could find on the net was AES or MVS related; even though I own both systems, I've only got a few games, only 6 of the very, VERY expensive AES carts and a few more of the cheaper MVS carts.

well thats great :) we hope to see you around a lot :lol

in order to stay "efficient" we had to merge, move...etc... and we lost a lot of the neo cd fanbase as well. A lot of people sold... got out... or became uninterested.

But hey... we'll keep getting more members.. and the section will keep growing.

You know... it would be cool if we could make an experimental modded neo cd system with a load of ram. Then made each game load entirely into ram (clear out when you turned off the system)... but that way... you would only be accessing ram from then on out. There would be 1 bad initial load and thats it.

Even if I really can't help (I study criminology, and I don't know nothing about electronics... PC's and NGCD's may work thanks to black magic for what I know... :lol), I always wondrerd how the load times could be so bad, and often ended up asking myself your same questions... but since I never heard nor read of someone trying to mod a NGCD, I thought it simply wasn't doable, even if the basic principle (putting on a NGCD a bigger cache) was as easy as it can be...
But I always respected SNK, and tought: "What the heck! If it was so simple, they would have come up with that solution when releasing the system in the first place!" :lol

Well commercial cds are usually pressed and not burned like we do with our computer. So if it had a faster drive there would not be a compatibility problem. You can put your neo geo cds in the computer and play them on a REALLY crappy emulator but with a 24x cdrom. Load times are good, but compatiblility sucks due to bad emulation.

EDIT: Personally I would like to mod my neogeo with a 24x or greater cdrom and see the games load real fast ;-)
