Neo Geo CD Neo Geo CD FAQ update (work in progress)

Hi guys,

Tak here, some of you may know me from neo-geo.com. A while ago, I added a NGCD faq to this nice site, and now I'm about to update/enhance it for the third and hopefully last time.

If you have any questions, suggestions or new bits of info that you feel should be added to it, post them here.

Thanks.

Hey ! welcome to the boards tak :)

Good to have you around!

I'll look up a few things maybe to add that you do not have... but I do like the FAQ as it is now :lol :)
but hey.. If you want to improve it... by all means go for it.

I hope some of the members will respond, as this section has been slow for awhile now.

Glad to have you here :)

Whats up Takumaji? Very good news indeed..the thought of your FAQ being any more in depth is just astounding honestly. Its already very well written and filled with info. If you need any help with anything at all or questions..and theres a small chance maybe I can help..let me know ;)

Hi guys, thanks for the welcome!

The faq update will be split in two parts. First, I will make the whole thing a little more readable by converting it to html using the color scheme of neogeocd.net. Second, I will add more tech-related info and rework some paragraphs.

Also, I've decidet to finally give in and add an emulation section with general q&a about this topic. I will mention some popular emulators but won't link to any emu downloads, not even legal ones. I know that the emu scene is dominated by pirates and warez dudez who get off on stealing other ppl's works, but since the NGCD is a discontinued system for nearly six years now, emulation as a means of preserving our beloved machine for many decades to come is acceptable.

I'm still thinking about a conversion section (cart to CD). The info I've read on Charles Doty's site about his conversion projects left me smirk'ing at first, but I have to admit that I like the thought of beign able to play previously unreleased games on CD, specially late releases like NitD, but also older stuff, tho I doubt that it will be possible to convert most giga games like Slug 3, Strikers or MotW, at least not with halfway decent load times.

What's your guys take on this?

I hate to say it... I thought it was awesome at 1st.... I wanted andro dunos on the Cd..

but I am an official retailer for SNKNeo Geo USA consumer corp ( I will be buying direct from them).

Anyway... the only concerns I have is with what their take is on the subject. I know there could be "potential" legal implications if games are converted..etc Its a touchy subject.... and I am not sure what to think on it yet.

I know people disagree on the emulator topic.... but I have to be honest, I am not a fan of them at all. 80% of the people I talk with who use them say they use them so they don't have to buy the original... they don't want to spend money. The other 20% had the originals of the games they had in the emulator..etc

I am not sure what to think on them.... i understand the whole preservation issue... but in reality... who really uses it for that? and with the original prices coming down... you can pick up a collection for a decent price.

Well, yes, I know that the preservation aspect of emulation is not what ppl are up to, it's all about playing without paying. I don't like that at all, but there's little you can do about it. Ppl seem to have no clue about what's wrong and what's okay, at least on the internet. In real life, none of them would consider stealing stuff an option to get what they want, but as soon as they're online, they download warez, romz and whatnot, and they couldn't give a flying fart about it. Talk about double standards...

Still, there's more to emulation than just freeloaders and warez, and that's the light side of the whole thing that I want to address in my faq.

About the conversion thing, I don't think SNKP would be very happy about that, but from a technical point of view, it's a very interesting project. I will keep an eye on it, and be it just to see an MVS-only game running on NGCD...

Btw., any chance for an AoF2 Takuma avatar for me? :)

The old emu debate..tis as old as time heh.

On one hand they are very useful for testing out games, for screenshots, and testing works in progress such as what Doty is doing.

They can be used to save the life of a Neo-Geo CD from wear and tear...they can be beneficial.

But on the other hand...very few people use them in those ways...tuff debate..I myself do not mind it...but do not endorse it either hehe.

As for the conversions...I'm very interested myself from a technical standpoint as well..I'd love to see Ghostlop for one running on the system..which I do not think would be much of a legal issue since it was an unreleased prototype.

Hey Tak.... I also wanted to let you know (like you don't know already) but your Neo CD FAQ is a really good addition to this site.

I have sent the URL along to many people needing help... and everyone has said how helpful it has been.

I thought you might like to hear (Read) that.

I am still trying to think of what could make this better.
MAYBE a listing of what NEo CD power adaptors go with what system? IE the numbers that correspond to what region of system.
Maybe which power adaptors come with the little adaptor...... IE many US CD systems came with a small mini adaptor (it looked like SNK used the PAL power adaptors and threw on a small adaptor to fit US plugs).

Stuff like that. I could try to help you out with that as well :)
