Neo Geo CD PSU

Last time we discussed this at the old forums, we were talking about how one guy took and "AT" PSU from some pc, and converted it to work on a NGCD. if anyone ever found any details on this, please post it up and or contact Blue so he can slap it up on the site. this would be even MORE beneficial to the NGCD community than the UBER helpful controller fix that is floating around.

As some of you may remember, i had HUGE problems getting my NGCD situation in order cause of my damn PSU. the thing would reset the machine randomly. the PSU's are EXTREMELY hard to come by, and seem to be a bit fragile.

so the hunt is on again?

Replacing the PSU is a fairly easy process. My advice would be to buy a cheap NGCD, deck only, that might have a dead drive or something and just swap them out. Believe me, it's much easier than modifying an AT Power Supply to work with a NGCD console. It's funny, I've heard all these people have problems with their CD units dying, or the PSU's going out.. but I had a top-loader for two years that was bullet proof. The only thing that eventually killed it was the incompetence of the US Postal Service. I also had a CDZ that ran a little warm, but never gave me a single problem.

It says 10V and 5V. I wonder if 12V would cause a problem, especially since it normally reads less than 12V?

This is commonly done for the Amiga CD32 (the CD32 needs 12v though).

Any idea what the connector is called on the Neo Geo CD? If I can find the connectors, I'll have a friend solder one together to try it out.

The connector on the Neo Geo side is called LA-2001. http://www.dau-components.co.uk/cat_P15.html, scroll to the bottom of the page.

But, I cannot find any information on a female connector for this.

I know this is old, but if you wanted you could definately mod a pc power supply. A pc power supply has +5 V and +12 V, but neo geo cd uses +5 and +10. You would need to build a circuit which not only decreases the 12V by 2, but also decreases the current on both leads.

Edit: I was looking into this and found examples in my electronics book. For the 10V lead, you need to convert the PC power suppliy's 12V into a 10V and devide the current as well. For the diagram below, make load one the 10V Neo Geo plug. Load 2 is just a resistor to divide current. I need to calculate the resistances for R1 , R2 , and L2 for this to work out right.

Here is the circuit for the 5V Neo Geo CD connector. It is just a Current Divider, because the voltage is already 5V. L1 is the neo geo 5V and R1 is a resistor which draws current. This needs to be calculated as well.

Once this circuit is made, we just need a power connector to use with the neo geo cd. Anyone have ideas for this ;-)
