Okami: Acid Trip Adventure!

Has anyone played this game yet!? I was supposed to play it last night but my friend who purchased the game earlier that day brought the game case but forgot the game in his PS2. Regardless, I played the demo and was "intrigued" to say the least. No one can fault the art style from being something truly unique, but I wasn't so sure about how the gameplay would hold up. I know there's that whole celestial brush stuff, but is it really "all that"? I still really want to play this game but I have a feeling the gameplay is going to dissapoint, can anyone say one way or another what playing this game feels like?

You know, for a forum that seems to value innovation and gameplay over pretty graphics and technical achievements, it really is a shame that no one has played this game yet. :lol

I have it, but I was too busy playing Tales of the Abyss to get around to playing it (too many good games out at the same time, darnit).

For what it's worth, everyone I know that has played it (customers and friends alike) do nothing but rave about how awesome it is.

This is the 1st I've heard of the game....

When someone plays it... drop a message here :)

Hey Stealth.. don't be surprised.. mayn genious games go un noticed... etc. Look at Eternal Darkness. Some people these days don't even know about that game. It's crazy.

I had Eternal Darkness and quit playing after like 20 minutes and never played it again... but Okami on the other hand is a game that I;ve been eyeing for quite some time

But this game really hasn't been under the radar at all. The industry has been buzzing about it since E3 of the year before last. I'm actually quite surprised to hear that this is the first you've heard of it.

And yes, it is a shame that ED was looked over by many. It was one of the most original games this console generation.

I returned Okami so I could get Marvel Ultimate Alliance for the 360. I guess I don't like the innovative fact that Okami really has no gameplay value. If you like to look at paintings in musuems, this game will be perfect for you. This is jus my opinion though.

Okami is hindered somewhat by the fact that "the celestial brush system would have been a much better fit on the Wii."

That's usually the second thing I hear from my customers after "Okami is awesome."

My fears exactly. It seems to be artistic to the point where it's no longer fun, or even a game. :-\

From what I understood from the demo you really only draw three shapes with the brush, and ultimately the joystick works just fine to accomplish this. Using the Wii controller for the celestial brush mode might have been more fitting, but for the rest of the game (90%+) it would have made it an entirely different game. However, the gameplay being what it is, that may have been a good thing.

However, is it innovative? Undoubtedly. Is it good? Seems to be under some review at the moment, which I guess is always the gamble game makers take when they make games.

I think this game is under-rated though it has gotten alot of praise from fans and critics alike. (G4's X-Play rated it 5/5!) I was hesitant at first to purchase it, the only reason I did at the time was it's unique style, but when you actually get into it's game play it's simply pretty darn awesome. I have yet to beat it, it's so long! This being a good thing though. It almost has the Zelda-ish feel to it; the puzzle solving dungeons, the annoying fairy-like creature that follows you around giving you advice and such...Anyway, it is indeed a good game and worth buying in my opinion. Get it for it's uniqueness, it's beauty and because it IS fun! Sure the brush would be more workable on the Wii, but i think it suffices on the PS2 controller's joystick just fine. Blah blah blah, point being; GET THIS GAME! XP

Alright, I finally got my hands on this game, so I can say a few things for sure.

1) It is heavily "influenced" by Zelda. The area I played in was basically a glorified Kakarico, which, if you're looking for something really different may not be what you want to hear, but for myself I found it to be a good thing. It more or less feels like what Cel-da should have been.

2)The visuals are incredible. Everything just looks cool. A mountain in the distance looks like three pen strokes, but that makes it charming, unique, and a pleasure to see in a videogame. Definitely presentation-wise this game stands atop the rest. Except for the voices. They sound like Animal Crossing voices, except worse. If they didn't pitch them up so much it wouldn't be so bad, but they did, so it is that bad.

3)The gameplay is, well, alright. Controlling your character is a lot of fun, and the little visual touches that accompany your character's actions definitely keep your eyes busy. The celestial brush really doesn't feel right at all though. Sometimes you know what it is you have to draw but it will take the game 14 or 15 times to recognize it. It is a very rigid system, and ultimately it feels incomplete. You can use your brush to slice enemies, but aside from that you only really bust out the ink skills when the game demands it of you. Because of that, it becomes and extremely linear excercise in a mundane play mechanic, instead of the grand adventure that it feels like the rest of the time. I don't think the Wii controller would have aided/hindered the brush function, it's basically just poor level design and a lack of imagination that ruined what could have been a really unique gameplay mode.

All in all, it is a great game, and is proof that there is still life to be found in the current consoles. It does conform to many adventure game staples, but it does feel and look different, so it is actually fun to go through all the puzzle solving cliches we've been handed before. Now, I only did play what I think is the opening stage, so the game may blossom into something truly unique by the end, I can't say for sure. My impression of the game was that it's strengths far outweigh it's shortcomings. It is a gem, and it's too bad we won't see an Okami 2 on the PS2, as I'm sure it would have been something incredible to play.

I liked it.....Isn't my fav. game, but thought it was fun(but not art)

I like acid trips. If you described it accurately, perhaps I'll like Okami!

Really though, I saw this awkward title at E3 06, I believe. It was intruiging, to say the least (and to be repetitive). However, I've been too busy buying other things, which makes me a bad man.
