PC-Engine DUO CD audio dropping out...

I read in another forum a few months ago that this was a common issue, but I can't find any information on it now that my Japanese DUO is doing it. Everything works fine, CDs load in the normal amount of time, chip music plays fine, but CD music streaming from the disk is erratic. Sometimes it's barely audible, other times it's not there or skips, and very occasionally it works fine! I had read that this was a relatively minor adjustment to the CD laser strength, using, I presume, the potentiometer. The problem is I can find absolutely no information online to back this up, or to point me to where the potentiometer is located exactly, or how much it should need to be adjusted. Really, *any* information would be great at this point, I'd really like to repair the thing rather than just sit with it "working" as it is.

Thanks,
Scott

welcome to the boards sheath! We hope you enjoy your stay and to see you around :)

I have an email into someone that deals a lot with PC-Engines... I'll see if I can come up with something for you, ok?

The boss pointed me to this thread and I'll add two cents here in brief.

The issue is unclear.

Seriously, I have been looking into this problem for years, literally. I have solved many of the other issues, but not that one. I thought I found what capacitor was causing the problem, but it's not reproducible. Sometimes replacing the laser works. I may try swapping out the op amps on it, but haven't had the chance.

If you want, I can try to fix yours, but no guarantees. If I can, then that's great. If not, I can offer you a fully functional DuoR (region modded too) and give you some credit for your Duo.

If you want to try to fix it first, that's fine, and getting a trade in the swap sounds reasonable as well. Roughly how much would the DUO R end up costing me after the discount?

Just to finish this one up, Dean from www.multimods.com really took good care of me. My DUO/R is very nice, and it was a pleasure to do business with him.

yeah... he definitely does a good job!

I've dealt with Dean for quite a long time.... he was one of my early customers :)
He does a good job at modding those systems.

hope to see you around on the forums :)
