Playstation 2 cleaning

My old 39000 series PS2 was having some problems playing a DVD tonight. When canned air and my Memorex CD lens cleaning kit didn't get it back to where it should have been, I took cleaning a step further.

Since my console is long out of warranty, and has been since I bought it used, I removed the "warranty void if removed" sticker and started taking out screws.

After carefully removing the top of the case, then opening the DVD drive, I used a combination of canned air and Q-tips to thoroughly dust it.

Fortunately, it still works; the funny grinding sound the disk tray was making has lessened, and it can read disks with no stuttering or disk read errors.

I don't have my camera with me today, otherwise I would have included pictures. That will have to wait for next time!

Yeah it's pretty awesome how simple it is to do that and fix the DRE. Did that 6 years ago and my ps2 has not had a problem since.

Except I used a q-tip and rubbing alcohol

I think it was just years of dust and grime built up on the interal components. It didn't help that the unit used to belong to a smoker before I bought it. There was a gross residue all over the inside of that PS2.

I usually just air dust from the outside of electronics and use a Memorex CD/DVD cleaning disk to clean out the lens. This was beyond that though!

Cleaning Disk have one little flaw imho. That brush on the end of the disc is scratching the hell out of the eye.

Yep, a q-tip, a little window cleaner, and that sucker runs like new. I also reapply grease to the tracks the laser moves on.

Doesn't a q-tip leave some amount lint behind though? I haven't personally had to clean my lenses, but I have seen some that have a soft, rounded stick to clean it. Which shouldn't leave behind any lint.

I don't think a wet/moist q-tip leaves behind any lint. At lease none that I have seen, and I have used them to clean lenses, 64 games, nes games, etc.

I used Q-tips on the case, not the lens.

I used a CD/DVD cleaning disk, which has soft brushes on a CD to clean the lens itself.
