PS2 Multitap questions

Hi, I already posted these in the general forum, but it doesn't look like that gets many hits. Rather than repost it all here, I'll just give you the link. Please take a moment to check it out if you have/know anything about the PS2 multitaps, or any other system's multitap for that matter.

You can just post any answers in there, so people don't have to read 4 different threads to get what is going on. Thanks.

I guess not a ton of people check this particular page, that and the questions I asked were kinda vague. Anyway, I sort of have a more refined and direct question now. I own one of the normal S___-5000 series PS2's. As far as I can tell, there are 3 Sony-brand multitaps. The first is the white L-shaped thing that you use with a PS1, or you can use it with a PS2 while playing PS1 games. The second is the black multitap made for the normal PS2. The last is the new multitap made for the new slim PS2.

My question is, does that second one, the one for the normal PS2, work with both PS1 and PS2 games and memory cards? In other words, is it the only multitap I will ever have to buy to play all PS1 and PS2 games on my particular PS2? Or am I going to have to get one of those white L-shaped ones too?

Likewise, the newest one, the one for the slim PS2, on the Sony website, they specifically say it will work with both PS1 and PS2 games. However my question is will it work on the normal PS2, like mine? Or does it only work with the new slim PS2?

Thanks.

Truthfully, I couldn't tell you. I don't have one myself, and so I don't know the answers to your questions. Send a PM to Bluevoodu, he may know.

there is a third party multitap that has a fifth controller spot. made by performance. works well actually. sony didn't have an official one immediately released.

as for the backwards compatability with the ps2 using ps1 multitap games, i'm not sure. i know for a fact it doesnt' work vice versa, but if that one says it works for the flat, it'll work for the normal. the technology wouldn't exclude the normal ps2 and include the ps1. so the new one should work for all

Well, I got off my butt and went down to the local Walmart to take a look at the multitaps. It turns out they only carry the "new" one made for the new flat PS2. I read the back of it and it specifically says it "only works with model SCPH-7000 series" and it says it will NOT work with the "SCPH-3000 and SCPH-5000 series" which is what I have, a 5000.

So it would seem I am stuck trying to find an old PS2 multitap. Unfortunatly it is going to be a real pain to locate one, order it, test it, and find out it only works with PS2 games, and in order to play 3+ player PS1 games I will have to find one of those old PS1 multitaps as well.

I'm not going to totaly give up though. It seems to me the most likley reason why they had to make a new multitap for the new PS2 is probably because it has a different spacing between its controller ports and memory card ports, as the multitap plugs into both. Therefore it is likley that it would work in the old PS2, if one could make it fit. So perhaps with some carefull cutting and refitting, I may get it to work.

walk on dangerous ground with that kind of thing :p
what games do you possibly play that are good for psx multi? i'm kinda curious, cause i only remember wrestling and sports games that i used mine for. and all those have better versions now :-\
