Satoru Iwata's Gaming Revolution

"Better technology is good, but technology is not enough." Nintendo's president, Satoru Iwata, who's risen through Nintendo's ranks like the Willy Wonka of hardware, has been saying such seemingly baffling things for well over two years. But at Nintendo's press event, with the Nintendo DS in hand, Mr. Iwata's statements could finally be grasped by the gaming industry. "We are proud that we established portable gaming with Game Boy. But I think we are most proud of this," he said, raising the DS high. "Of course, Nintendo DS is not the only change in our future. ...I want you to know that Nintendo is working on our next system. And that system will create a gaming revolution. Internal game development is under way. When the impact of the new home machine comes, our revolution will be there. I suppose I could give you a list of our technical specs--I believe you'd like that [he laughs with the audience]--but I won't. For the simple reason that they really don't matter. The time when horsepower alone made an important difference is over. From this time on, we must create something more than we've been experiencing. The same way we have with the Nintendo DS."

This is interesting cuz I was wondering what the next systems were going to be. I mean how good can they make graphics? And once they've maxed that out, where do they go from there? E3 next year is going to be very interesting.

I still don't really know what to think of the DS yet.....but he's right, there isn't much room for improvement in the graphics department, so they have to go somewhere.

everything will just keep getting more realistic looking.

But I'd rather have my games..etc... with art, not everything looking realistic.

Realistic is cool, but I want art as well.

The cheers in the audience at the press conference after that statement were pretty loud, though. I think Iwata's on the right track for the most part.

I plan on sticking with Nintendo from here on out. Though I am not sure I will upgrade right away, I have Zelda and Harvest Moon and I rarely have time to play them. Those two games are going to last me for a long while.

Neph doesn't think the DS is revolutionary enough, so he's skeptical that the Revolution will be revolutionary if the DS is any indication. That's what you mean, right Neph?

DS is pretty revolutionary.... incorporating a touch screen in with video games... along with a lot of other features... not to mention dual screens.

but, I also think he is more stating the next console succeeding the Gamecube.
I cannot wait to see about it!

I love my Xbox and PS2, but the GCN is still my favorite. I bought it first, and have played it the most. I hope Nintendo's new system buts them back on top of the market. I'm not hoping the others do badly, but I hope Nintendo does at least a little better. :woot

There would be no love lost for me if one of the other systems completely flopped, namely Microsoft. Sony's got some good ideas and are good competition for Nintendo, but I would really like to see Nintendo beat the crap out of Microsoft. Not like that's gonna happen, I'm just saying is all.

I'd almost pay to see Nintendo beat down Microsoft :lol

As for the DS... we'll have to wait and see.... I am betting it will be done well.
If there is something Nintendo knows.... its handhelds. Hopefully they have it right :)
