Snakes

BioShocker!
I thought this would be an interesting topic. I've been interested in snakes (pythons and boas - boidae - mostly) for a little over two years now. I'm waiting for a little more financial stability before I purchase a Ball Python sometime in the future. Right now, I'm looking after my friend's Boa Constrictor, George, (who's a little nippy right now and then, but doesn't mind being held most days) and Corn Snake, Motley, while he's away in Spain. In fact, I'm leaving in an hour or so because it's feeding day and I left a couple of rats on the side to defrost for their dinner.

Anyway, what are your views on snakes in general? Anyone actually have any? Or is all you have a phobia? Discuss.

Normal. Fine. On a plane. Not so much.

Ha, I got the Snakes on the Plane thing first.

I used to catch all kinds of snakes and frogs and toads and turtles as a kid, snakes were the hardest in my oppinion to take care of. Everything else lived for a long while but snakes always died shortly after I caught them, like within 2-3 weeks, and I never could figure out why. I was always gentle with them, but I smartened up after the first 2 or 3 died, and stopped trying to confine them. But I suppose if they were born in captivity it might be a different story. My friend Tanya had 2 boas at one point but one died of mites that clogged its nasal passages and the other died somehow but i'm not sure.

I like snakes. I used to have pet snakes when I was younger, and one of my aunts raised boas for a while.

Snakes are way cooler than spiders.

Last year I saw a really cute tiny snake that was a deep red. It looked like a grass snake, only red. It was in the woods beside my house. I like to look at reptiles, but prefer lizards, turtles and frogs to snakes. I have caught snakes in a bucket before, but I always let them go so I they wouldn't die.

I'd realy like a pet salamander. I hope you are able to get yourself a snake though, Samamir!

Sounds like a red racer. I had a dog who ate one once, and almost died.

I'm not much of a fan of snakes. More indifferent than anything. Back home, just about every snake that came through my yard was poisonous. Western diamondbacks, sidewinders, copperheads, etc. Now that I am in NC, all I have to worry about really are cottonmouths, pigmy rattlers, Eastern diamondbacks, etc. I have kids who are fearless and love playing with frogs and junk. They know to stay away from snakes, but all it takes is one time...

i respect snakes, given the amount of crap they get about being satanic serpants and all

spiders, on the other hand, i cant handle

Snakes are fine, provided they aren't venomous...or a gigantic python that will strangle you to death. I think they're pretty cool, provided they aren't about to kill me.

I hate all spiders on the other hand...

All we ever get here are garder snakes in NY.

My dad has a phobia to snakes and frogs, it freaks him out to touch them. Then again, I have a phobia towards bees and wasps. More or less, small, fast insects that hurt.

snakes are beautiful animals. very quiet, not mean at all, unless scared (like every animal)

they can be intimidating at times, though

there is no excuse for spiders though. none.

I love snakes, and they're very beautiful and very misunderstood creatures.

Spiders, on the other hand, are vile, disgusting creatures... I tried to watch a documentary on them about a week ago, but all that did was make me realize how weird and disgusting they really are...

That's the best picture of a Ball (or Royal, as they are in my country) Python. One thing I hate about snakes in the pet industry is that the owner's are so far up themselves that they're sophisticated enough to own a snake, they don't even look after them properly. This often causes illness or death. I've made a point to not be one of those by keeping track withh everything a Ball Python needs for two years. I created a three page caresheet that also highlights what to do in the event of bad health. Unfortunately, I believe it was deleted when my computer got "fixed".
