Sony respondes to Activision's threats to ditch Playstation! Say WHAT!

Activision threatens to leave Sony and to stop supporting Playstation!

"PlayStation has tremendous momentum coming out of E3, and we are seeing positive growth with more than 350 titles slated to hit across all our platforms, including many anticipated games from our publishing partners," said Playstation spokesman Patrick Seybold. "We enjoy healthy business relationships with and greatly value our publishing partners and are working closely with them to deliver the best entertainment experience."

Indeed Sony announced an impressive line-up of first and third-party PS3 and PSP titles at their annual retailer meet-up Destination Playstation and then spent a bulk of their E3 press conference whipping through triple-A title after triple-A title.

As interesting as it is to read about some publishing exec making vague threats, I'd be much more interested to learn what really prompted this. Perhaps we should be reading more into Kotick's comments in the same article about the royalties that Activision is having to pay out to Sony.

Wow, if Activision did ditch Sony (I don't think it is likely, but who knows?) it would be a huge blow to Sony. No Call of Duty or Guitar Hero (easily two of the most popular franchises out today) would be terrible, especially since both the Wii and 360 have them.

I don't see how this makes them evil. It is completely legitimate. Saying "Hey guys, this is supposed to be a partnership. But you are screwing us, and we are giving you a deadline to shape up or we are pulling out of the partnership." is just a sensible way of doing business.

And, to be honest, EA isn't nearly as bad as they were a few years ago. Maybe that's just my opinion though.

EA has been fine for the past few years. And this situation isn't the only reason why Activision is being evil. Releasing the same game almost 3 times a year. Leaving the ESA and ditching E3 because they think they are better off without. The list goes on.

Yeah, but that's a matter of perspective. Releasing all the Guitar Hero games doesn't bother me (one because I don't buy them, two because they do it to give fans more songs not just money). And the way they've set up the Call of Duty (two developers making them, so we get a high quality 2 year game every year) is nothing short of brilliant and benefits the fans a lot.

To illustrate the point, Mr Kotick stands on a plastic skateboard that turns out to be the controller for Tony Hawk: Ride — the company's attempt to reignite the well-worn franchise.

Not quite the proverbial soapbox traditionally used to dispense wisdom. Activision is just as reactionary as any company out there, and the only thing they're good at is selling the same game more than once. Maybe the return on investment for Activision games on the PS3 has to do with the fact that there are a number of great third-party PS3 games that PS3 owners would rather play. There are over 20 million PS3's out there. If Activision can't find a way to sell games for the PS3 maybe they should look at the quality of their PS3 games before they shuffle all the blame onto Sony.

If Mr. Kotick really believes that a Wii game that sells should sell similarly on the PS3 he has no friggin perspective on the games industry at all. The PS3 audience is one that is deeply invested in gaming -- they're not interested in buying the same game multiple times. Activision should address that before they bother looking at Sony's business practices.
