Skylanders Spyro's Adventure! Brings toys and videogames together.

What if you could pick up a toy at Toys "R" Us, bring it home, and then upload it into a video game as a playable character? That's the concept behind Activision's Skylanders Spyro's Adventure.

It's a new Spyro game, but Spyro the Dragon is just one of many characters Activision is bringing to life in Skylanders Spyro's Adventure, debuting today at a special pre-Toy Fair event in New York City. Developed by Activision's Toys For Bob studio, Skylanders brings together video games and toys like never before.

Using something called Portals of Power, players will be able to take real-world toys and bring them to life within the game. The premise is that a sinister Portal Master known as Kaos has trapped 30 or so heroes in the real world, where they are frozen like statues. Players will use the toys to free the characters to adventure in the game world.

Skylanders Spyro's Adventure Brings Toys And Video Games Together This is one of the toys players will use to connect with the game. Statistics from the game will be stored inside each toy, allowing players to carry their game experience and leveled up skills into battle elsewhere.

"These are more than action figures. They are inter-action figures," said Eric Hirshberg, CEO of Activision Publishing. "By pairing world class character design, world class video game design and world class story telling into one entertainment experience, we've given players a whole new genre that bridges the gap between the real and virtual worlds. From the first time a kid picked up a stick and pretended it was a sword, toys have unlocked kids' imaginations. And how often have you wanted to bring those toys to life, to see them become animated and take them on an adventure? Skylanders Spyro's Adventure does just that."

Our own Stephen Totilo is at the Skylanders Spyro's Adventure event as we speak, and will be bringing us hands-on impressions and video of the game in action shortly, so stay tuned!

My two cents: Activision is a red flag in my eyes atm. Be warned, this could be the death of Spyro.

Spyros long been dead. Most people stopped seeing hope in him after the first 3.

So from what I gather in this article, Activision is selling a game that uses action figures as characters in a video game.

So theoretically, if I wanted to play as all 30 characters, I'd have to buy all 30 "inter-action" figures? Sounds like nickel and diming at its best.

It's definitely nickel and diming, but one I wouldn't have minded when I was a kid. I mean, hell yeah I want an action figure and I get to play with him in the game too?!

Big Bump!

I really haven't heard if anyone here has had a chance at this game. My daughter is into it. She is a Spyro fan of the PS1 and GBA games.

It has really been some wild price gouging by people during the shortage of the characters on ebay and Toys-r-Us, plus Gamestop online. Some of the figures I have seen go for as much as $99.00. This really gets under my skin.

We waited for the next batch to hit the store shelves.
My daughter and I walked into Walmart today and was able to pick a few of the same Characters for their original price of $7.99. The wait is over. I picked up one so that we can play together on the Wii. My daughter is main glued to the 3DS with this game.

And the title made me think of the video that suggests that Spyro the dragon is the offspring of the Spy and Pyro from TF2...

*shudders*

as a long time Naughty Dog and Insomniac games fan it is hard to stomach watching games such as Spyro and Crash crash and burn because lets face it, they are hollow shadows of what they used to be back in the late 90s in their hay day. What should have happened when these developers got tired of these games they should have kept the series rights and names and not given them over to anyone else so they stay pure. I had tweeted to Jason Rubin (co-founder of Naughty Dog and creator of Crash) "@Jason_Rubin dude I love your games. Gotta ask you tho, how can you stomach watching Radical destroying the Crash series?!" he replied very cleverly with this statement "@pianoman_kandra Watching Crash's fall was hard my friend. I have said before, it was like seeing your daughter leave high school to strip!" its sad but true. now i understand that Naughty Dog kinda had their hands tied behind their backs in the situation but the principal goes with Insomniac and how they essentially left Spyro out to dry for games like Ratchet and Clank (wish has gone down the drain) and Resistance (which is a mediumish game at best). So i mean its hard to watch this as a fan to see Spyro put in a new universe, without Sparks, Ripto, Hunter, Elora, and even Gnasty Gnorc! Those r the characters that the Spyro universe was built on and, just as the new developers of Crash have done, have reduced it so something that doesn't do the name a justice. Altho one positive on Skylander's, Hans Zimmer composed the theme for the game so that is a plus even in all the let downs of a universe change.

The game is a pretty good game. It is not your usual Spyro game and therefore does not have the feel of the early games. It is unique, additive, and fun. (You have to build up your character like in an RPG) The 3DS version is the best and gives you more control of your character. It is very expensive to get into the game due to all of the figurines you will end up purchasing, you need them to play and open up parts of the game. I really think that Activision dropped the ball on this one. Yeah it is a cool concept in gaming but after months of the game being released, there are still characters that we are waiting for to be released. How many gamers have given up hope? Has anyone kept the interest in playing during this long wait? Not sure what the general feel of the game is at this point by many.

This concept is something that needs exploring and more experimentation. I would like to see it used in fighting games and RPGs for starters.
