3DS has a physical analog stick. The original DS didn't so you had to control Mario with the Touch Screen, which made the game less intuitive.

But Nintendo need to make new mario games and stop re-releasing old ones. Who are they? SEGA?

basically, the all of the Nintendo DS versions thus far had a little pen to control your character or w/e but now you can use the analog stick to move around to make it better to play this kind of game.
