I have played Sword of Mana on many occasions. If you ever played and enjoyed the Secret of Mana series for the Snes (which you all should have, and if you haven't, then shame on you for depriving yourself) then you should also get your money's worth out of this game. It is an RPG, in that you play the role of a hero (male or female, story varies slightly depending on whichever you choose) and you do go through a levelling up system which determines what type of character you are, so you get to choose whether you want to use magic more than your sword and vice versa. The fighting itself is real time, but still keeps many role playing elements, such as poison, sleep, and all that good stuff. You also get to use a variety of weapons and magic which you collect throughout the game and level up individually. This is cool as it mixes up the gameplay a bit, but is also annoying as you can only have one weapon out at a time, and switching requires menu toggling, which becomes a real pain in the... well, you know. As well, you may have your sword at a kickin rad lvl 50, but everything else might still be a lvl 1, meaning some areas/enemies are gonna be really difficult later on. This translates into a lot of levelling up, so getting a new weapon/magic is kind of a mixed blessing.
All in all the game is a solid RPG that in the end will suck hours upon hours of your life away but it will feel somewhat rewarding. It's not as great as the original Snes games from which it was inspired, but it's completely portable and about as close as you're gonna get on this side of the Pacific. For of you who enjoy fantastical stories and pumping in hours of free time into a non-existent being, and not being shackled down by the drudgery of turn based menu scrolling (like myself) then it's definitely worth at least a rental. For those of you who are used to the more traditional RPG's and have never played or had any interest in any Secret of Mana games, you're not gonna miss a whole lot by passin this game up. If you're not already a fan of the genre, this game won't turn you into one, but if you are, then add this one to your all too small real-time RPG games.
