Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology

Basically, hearing about Tales of the World is the reason I got another PSP (I had one before but got rid of it). So now the game is out, and the question is, was it worth it?

And the answer is: Yes. Most definitely. :)

TotW: RM is not a standard Tales game. It's more of a dungeon crawler, really. The appeal of the Tales of the World games (there are more, they just haven't come out here in the US) is that you get to see Tales characters from other games.

RM for example has Lloyd, Genis, Raine, and Kratos from Tales of Symphonia; Senel from Tales of Legendia; Luke and Tear from Tales of the Abyss; Rutee, Stahn, Garr, Leon, and Philia from Tales of Destiny; Arche and Chester from Tales of Phantasia; Nanaly and Reid from Tales of Eternia (I think?) and I'm not sure which Tales games Eugene, Annie, and Harold are from (maybe Tales of Destiny 2, which I haven't played).

Anyway, the basic story behind Radiant Mythology is that your character is born from the World Tree in the world of Terressia, and as a Descender, your task is to help save the World Tree from the Devourer. You start on the story by finding about about Ad Libitum, which is the group of Tales characters that do stuff in the world. When you first start, Kratos, the leader, won't let you join Ad Libitum until you prove yourself. In order to do that, you take on assignments from people. You'll do menial stuff like fetching things from dungeons or killing one monster for someone. For every task you complete, you earn Fame points. The more Fame you earn, the more people trust you, and the more tasks you get. Eventually when you reach a certain amount of fame, Kratos will give you a main story quest, and if you complete it, Kratos will accept you as a member of Ad Libitum. That in turn leads to even more story quests, and if you complete those, you unlock new characters, new jobs, and even new towns.

So far I'm about 20 hours in and my character is already level 43 (and that's after switching jobs, too). You level up pretty fast, so that makes it a little more fun. I think I'm almost done with the story part of the game, but there's still a ton of missions I need to do. It's so much fun though. I love being able to have a party with me, Tear, Rutee, and Arche. :lol Tales fangirl dream come true. ^_^

Anyway, I'd say if you are already a Tales fan, you will enjoy this game despite it not being a traditional Tales game. If you're not a Tales fan, I'm not sure how it would hold up.

Ahhh I read about this! I need a PSP now. I'm kind of confused though.

A. Who, exactly are you? Like the main character...is it Lloyd, Genis, or someone else?

B. Do I need to play the other Tales games to know what's going on in this one?

A. You actually get to create your own character, and you can name it whatever you want (up to eight letters). When you start you get four jobs to choose from: Warrior, Thief, Mage, and Priest.

Warriors are pretty much just what they sound like. No magic or anything. You just hit things with weapons. As far as I can tell, none of the actual Tales characters have this job, so I can't give a good example.

Thief is the jack-of-all-trades. Thieves can melee, use magic, and heal in addition to stealing items. :) Rutee from Tales of Destiny is a thief.

Mages are magic users. Their spells are mainly offensive in nature. Arche is a Mage.

Priests are the healers, and they have some offensive spells. Raine and Tear are priests.

Once you help certain characters, they give you the ability to get different jobs. Since I started as a warrior, I was given the option to change into a Swordsman or a Fighter (like Senel).

I went with Swordsman because that's my favorite. Lloyd, Luke, and Reid are swordsmen. :)

At any time after you are accepted into Ad Libitum, you can change your job by talking to Kratos. The only catch is that you start at level 1. So for example if you start the game as warrior and you get to level 10 and decide to change to thief, you will be a level 1 thief. The good thing is that if you go back to being a warrior, you will still be at level 10. And like I said, leveling is pretty easy.

B. No, not really. It just makes the character interactions make more sense. :)
