DirectX 11 is what the Xbox 720 is going to have, and these GPUs do an excess of 180 GB/sec memory bandwidth with 1.8 GB of GDDR5 in the first generation. AMD R800 due Christmas 2009

Possible games

* Halo 3
* Guild Wars 2
* World of Warcraft II
* Half-life 3
* Doom 4
* Unreal Tournament 4
* sequels to sequels, no doubt!

Here are teh options

* Buy when near comes out
* Buy first generation when 2nd generation comes out
* Buy Second generation and skip first generation (GTX 8800 >> GTX 295)
* Wait until the first high production value PC game comes out in DirectX 11, and then buy first DX11 GPU.
^ this is not a superior option...I just don't know how everyone else times their GPU purchases.

I don't know...I'm not an purchasing expert. I wanna have some (not a whole lot) bragging rights. Oh yeah, and one other thing...state your bias towards Nvidia or AMD.

The Xbox 3, and yes it's coming out unless you're a retard. Of course you're dissing me! :'(

The only reason to buy a Direct X 11 card is when someone buys a game that supports DX11 and is already using an operating system that supports DX11 (Windows 7 for sure, possibly Vista as well).

There is no real point getting a DX11 card if all games one plays are DX10 or 9 and if they do not use an OS supporting DX11.

Definitely wait for:
1.) Windows 7 to be OFFICIALLY RELEASED.
2.) The 1st Generation of the DX11 cards to receive newer updates.
3.) A decent number of DX11 activated games.

I wasn't sold on DX10 right away... but now I'm a believer. I can't wait to see what DX11 has to offer.

there were some worries that ATi has always been late to the competition, and they couldn't afford go get left behind any longer. when i read the article, i was like, WHAT, theres 11 already when all i've got is 9??

Even after i read the article, to me, the software bit still sounds more like DX10.5 and not 11
though i have to admit they did push the hardware a lot

It's sounds like 10.5, because DirectX 11 games play on DirectX 10 hardware w/o the extra special effects such as the new bump mapping technology. Developers do that to make it pay. I know I'm getting at lowest end, a Radeon HD 5870 or Geforce GTX 380, because what can 250 Gbits/sec memory bandwidth do that 153 Gbits/sec cannot?

:lol besides a few MHz differences... I don't see any. I'm still trying to decipher the difference via bench marks and reviews.

Good call though :)

I betcha you're all not answering, because technology is constantly changing and you never win. GPUs are like commercial printers....$3000 one day, $1000 a year later. And then you're like me (brilliant decision), use one of those industrial HP 1998 era laser jets (things a dinosaur, because it lasts forever!) that print 1500 pages on 1 black ink cartridge than refill at "Twin Cities Cartridge Refills" for $45!

GPUs pretty much last a decade, right? I'm guessing with my 2007 era mobo, a SLI could only handle this GTX 380 SLI. I think they moved to PCIe 3.0 already? I believe I got a 1st gen PCIe 2 SLI board.

of course you never 'win'. you simply can't win on these things; as if someone is gonna upgrade their stuff everytime something new comes out (which, as you can see, happens pretty often).

best option would be to upgrade as few times as possible (without going all pre-historic of course), and aim at about... 1 year old stuff. saves money AND keeps the benchmarks steady.

cost-benefit analysis <- this.

Really, as long as the hardware you have can utilize the software you want to run, there is no point in upgrading ('cept bragging rights).

If you have an older PC that can no longer run the games you want to play at acceptable performance, then it is definitely time to upgrade. <- obviously

Striped Sausage. Is that you Comrad Bob Haggerty? I know you have V for Vendetta and like it very much. So are you getting geothermal with your bungalow? Did I call you Marxist too many times over the phone for us to talk again? I'm glad Marxists still like videogames and Guitar Hero. Just so you people on here don't get confused, but I voted for the Republicans on 11/04/08. Knew this all this time

its people like viking that make me sad im a republican. the far right, almost (ALMOST!!!) as bad as the far left.

I'm on the far side. :D
