Is actually a diamond mine.

I thought it was pretty cool... the thing could swallow the whole city!

weird stuff.... and it says the suction above the hole caused some helicopters to crash? :huh

I am curious as to how there would be "suction" above the hole...

I understand that wind could probably cause some problems there... but how could suction? does the wind follow the "hole shape" and cause a "whirlpool" effect or I wonder how it works.

:lol .. um... my symantec AV caught/killed a virus from that page... viewers beware...

It was the 1st time that happened... so I don't know what the deal was. It was a downloader of some sort.

Those crazy Russians! :p Seriously though...I wonder why they didn't just do a more "conventional" mine. Y'know...with shafts and such.

I wondered about the suction thing too. Kudos to whoever has the will to work down there, not because of the hieght, but that would be a LONG drive.

yeah... I wonder how long of a drive that is.

Maybe they just work off and on and then sleep down there @ a base camp or something :lol

That truck is like an nat compared to that hole. I bet it takes them at least 2hrs to get down here, or even more.

Odd. Same thing happened to me. It tried to download, but I killed it before it could start.

Big friggin' hole though. Kind of an odd location too.

Here read this...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Venturi_effect

Only thing I can explain is that as I understand it air moving over a small hole creates a vacuum. I imagine if the wind is blowing fast enough over that hole (small compared to the rest of the region) a bit of a vacuum (or more likely an updraft) could I suppose upset a helicopter.

I can say this much...the venturi effect is how some air brushes work ;)
