Toshiba drops HD-DVD, Blu-Ray wins format wars

http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/16/toshiba-pulls-hd-dvd-support-blu-ray-wins/

The rumors were true. Japanese news source NHK (english translation and Reuters validation) is reporting that Toshiba is planning to drop support of HD DVD, striking a final blow to the format and conceding victory to Blu-ray. The Sony-backed high-definition disc has been gaining strides for some time, most notably after Warner Bros switched to Blu-ray exclusively. Toshiba is expected to face hundreds of millions of dollars in losses.

The so-called "format wars" seems to be at an end, and now we're left to ponder about the future, such as how big is the office party Sony is throwing in honor of its victory? More related to video games, might we see a future Blu-ray add-on (and subsequently rumors of a built-in drive) for the Xbox 360?

I didn't expect it to be this soon. Looks like Sony and the PS3 took a big chance and it's paying off.

No surprises here. There were reports everywhere of Toshiba pulling the plug on HD-DVD, some time in the next month.

Honestly, this war was over when Blu-Ray was put in the PS3, and HD-DVD wasn't put in every 360.

That was fast. Stuff like that shouldn't happen so fast. Though waiting for it to embed itself in the majority of homes will take years.

I think once the PS3 starts coming down in price and has a bigger game library, it won't be that long. Stand-alone Blu-ray players will probably also come down in price as the parts it takes to make them get cheaper.

It's SO bad

And that, my dear, is how PS2 conquered....$299 is the price mark of market take-over back then and rest assure, it will strike again...

It needs to address the game thing a bit more before it dominates.

The last major one they were in was, what 30 years ago? (Betamax)

Well, technically, Sony and Phillips co-developed the CD format. However, Phillips had already begun development while Sony was trying a competing format that failed. They then jumped on the bandwagon. Also, Betamax lost to VHS. Since Sony had tried Mini-Disc (failed), SACD (failed), and finally Blu Ray.

Eh, they've done pretty bad.

Betamax: Superior to VHS but bloody expensive.
Mini-Disc: Great idea but they put copy protection on their own CDs. This made it so Mini-Disc users couldn't get music from a Sony lable CD onto their Mini-Disc. Way to alienate your customers.
SACD: Great sound but required a special speaker setup.
CD: Great job with the root kits assholes.

They made a few crappy mistakes along the way.

They repeated that, but lucky for them, HD was too.

Yeah. At first I predicted Blu Ray would bite the dust but they equalized the price with HD. At that point I had a feeling HD was done for. Funny it took them this long to figure out the price thing. :lol

OKay, point taken.

Although like I said before, a couple of those format wars were pretty minor.
