October 01, 2004 - My fellow gamers, respect is finally upon us. Starting today, gamers (and non-gamers) can cast their votes for the Walk of Game, a landmark that gives video game icons, past and present, a proper place to be worshipped and idolized. Or at the very least, a new place for tourists to take their awful vacation pictures to show to friends and family who couldn't care less.

The voting will be held between October 1 and October 31. Gamers can cast their votes in two categories, "Game/Character" and "Lifetime Achievement". The top four vote getters in the "Game/Character" category and the top two in "Lifetime Achievement" will go on to receive 24"x24" customized, brushed-steel stars that will be installed on the floors of the Metreon in San Francisco. Results will be announced in November 2004 with the groundbreaking sometime in 2005.

And the nominees are…

Lifetime Achievement: Nolan Bushnell: Pong; Shigeru Miyamoto: Donkey Kong, Mario, and Zelda; Sid Meier: Pirates!, Red Storm Rising, and F-10 Stealth Fighter; Will Wright: Sim City and The Sims; and Yu Suzuki: Outrun, Shenmue, and Virtua Fighter.

Games/Characters: Donkey Kong, Doom, Final Fantasy, Grand Theft Auto, Half-Life, Halo, Lara Croft (Tomb Raider), Link (The Legend of Zelda), Mario, Master Chief (Halo), Max Payne, Mortal Kombat, Ms. Pac-Man, Myst, Pac-Man, Parappa the Rapper, Pong, Resident Evil, Ryu (Street Fighter), Sonic the Hedgehog, Star wars, Street Fighter, Tetris, Yorda (Ico) and Zelda (The Legend of Zelda).

TOUGH CHOICES!!! Except for the 1st one below here :lol

Shigeru Miyamoto: Donkey Kong, Mario, and Zelda
DUH!!

Doom, Final Fantasy,Link (The Legend of Zelda), Mario, Mortal Kombat, Ms. Pac-Man, Pac-Man, Pong, Ryu (Street Fighter), Sonic the Hedgehog, Star wars, Street Fighter, Tetris, and Zelda (The Legend of Zelda).

Right there are some tough choices... I am bending to say "all of Nintendo's games.... lets face it... nothing changed gaming more. Except... maybe... pong :lol Its not funny I guess... but no matter how you describe pong... without it, we wouldn't have what we have today either. Greatest influence = Nintendo IMO.

NOW... shooter wise... Doom.... EASILY hands down. Doom dominates Halo in ever aspect.... Doom's scope was MUCH larger than halo. End of story there.

Doom 2 was much better than Doom.

And the Doom is better than Halo comment is inciting flames :lol

Halo owns Doom, but they are really different games. Even with the same graphics, Doom is a solitary, zombie filled trip through heck. Halo is a not so solitary battle against religously fanatic aliens.

Shigeru Miyamoto for the Lifetime Achievement award! That's a no brainer. Nolan Bushnell didn't even create Pong; he just made the machines that played it. I think Will Wright is the only serious competition in that category.

The games are really hard though. A lot of those had major influence on the industry. If limited to one game and one character, I'd probably go with Half-Life for the game and Mario for the character.

your point #2 "religously fanatic aliens"  sounds like Turok Evolution :lol

I guess I should have said the doom series.  and yes...Doom 2 did own Doom.
but As for overall appeal, exposure, popularity..etc.... I am sorry.... Doom2 owns Halo BIG TIME.
I am not saying Halo is not a good or popular game, but the scope Doom2 had.... is nearly untouchable.  Quake 1 and 2 about made it there.

This guy (BTW) single handedly saved the Arcade market and Nintendo back in 1980-84. He has made some of the best games ever made.
He definitely should be held in high regards in the Gaming Industry.

Miyamoto hands down for lifetime acheivement.

As for game/characters, i'm gonna have to say Final Fantasy.  :)

Now, this is a good thread and I hope it doesn't turn into a "Doom v.s. Halo" war, but I will have my say here. As far as the better game, Halo wins there. But Doom beats it on many other aspects, mainly passing the torch to games like Halo.

Anyway, it's cool that video games have made it this far, and i'm definately gonna visit this landmark someday.

GUYS!! BV is not saying Doom is better than Halo, he is simply saying it had more of an impact on the gaming world {and he IS right}, which is what the awards are based on......sheesh ::)

What was also my point. I actually think that without Doom, there would be no Halo. Or at least it would be a lot different.

Shiggy gets my vote for Lifetime Achievement. Will might give him competition with the Sim series.

I can't really decide from all those games. But I can bet it will be a tie between FF, GTA, and Halo.
