Video Games

Hi,

I am doing research and I would like people to post what games they love the most and why. Explain in detail what was good and was could have been better.

IE:
I liked Fable because the story progressed and you learned more about your character and the world around you when you played. The cool items like the last sword and the demon doors. The graphics were kind of cartoonish, but all in all in was a good game.

You can post more than one game but please put a space between them so i can tell the difference.

Thx

OK then...

Alundra : PSX

It was one of those few hidden treasures you'd only find in a rental shop. I enjoyed it because of its deep storyline, dark atmosphere, and @#$& near impossible puzzles. It was kind of a cross between Final Fanatasy and LoZ: LttP. Only thing I didn't like was the games choice of colors. The creators seemed to be obsessed with the color brown...

Xbox-Halo 2

I definetly love the online play in H2. It is one of the first Xbox games to implement Xbox Live 3.0 into it, giving more competition through clans and other features. The matchmaking system is great, and being able to sign on guests and play custom games is awesome as well.

The graphics for this game are pretty amazing. Detailed maps and such are very nice to have. Customizing each character how you want him gives each user a unique identity and you can use the emblem to identify players in multiplayer matches.

Campaign is also pretty cool, but, really, most of my time has been devoted to multiplayer, so I dont know a whole much about it. The little I have played was fairly difficult and it was entertaining to play.

Overall, Halo 2 is a great game, and recommended for any fan of first person shooters.

What kinds of story lines do you like?

Ones where they wake up somewhere and don't know who they are but learn aboutr themselves slowly (Morrowind)? or ones where they know who they are and jsut go and beat up the bad guy (Fable)? I am talking more about RPGs than anything because I think these are the most in depth game that you can play. I have played all of the RPGs mentioned so far and I like them the most out of all of the gmae genres out there.

If you made a game, what would happen in the beginning? Would he/she be in the past, present or future? What would the point of the game? Why do the bad guys want that makes them the bad guys?

Thanks for the replys so far.

Im more of the Morrowind type fan. I like starting from scratch and learning about myself as the game progresses. :) That sorta sounds weird.

final fantasy 10.. my personal favorite in the series.. i liked the out standig visuals and the story line which the flashy graphics couldnt even compare to. i think that they laid out the characters perfect.

I kinda like games with battles..........especially with fleets of ships or thousands of troops or something like that......any huge battles, really.

I think the "amnesia" plotlines have become a cliche in videogames. I also think that bad guys in games most of the time are just bad because the player is usually supposed to be a hero protecting innocent people, not killing them. So for morality's sake the player just assumes that they're bad.

The storylines that I love in games (but rarely see) are ones with plot twists, developed characters, and something that I've never seen before. The Getaway was one of my favorite games for its plot. It was a very gritty, action packed plot that kept you in the dark as to what was really going. It was also great to see the story from two different perspectives when the main character changes halfway through. I also love the MGS: Twin Snakes for its storyline, Perfect Dark had some unique twists (Elvis especially), and Conker's Bad Fur Day had a ton of memorable characters and great dialogue in addition to showing the "end" first and then playing through the path that led the main character there.

I think storytelling is one area of videogames that developers should look into more and are beginning to do so. The time of saving princesses from one dimensional characters are over.

Great games? Two.

1. Mercenaries (PS2). Why? You have three different characters, so everyone can find someone they like. (and even if that isn't enough, there are tons of hidden "skins" you can unlock to add even more characters, including two people you know from some movies.) You can blow up everything, literally. If you see it, you can blow it up. This includes not only houses, but even faction headquarters. That's right. I blew up the Mafia HQ just to see if I was allowed to, and I was. Sure they got a bit pi... mad at me, but who cares? The missions are very varied to begin with, and they can be done in very creative ways. For instance, I needed to steal a code. To do this, I had to enter a heavily secured base. What to do? Simply steal a helicopter, fly in, get the code, fly out before anyone realized what had happened. ::) Next time through I shot my way it, killed everyone in my way, stole the code, killed everyone on my way out, level the base to the ground and dropped an "economical version of a nuclear bomb" on it just to be sure I wasn't followed. :D

2. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (PS2). Why? I'm not sure. I mean I hate this game deeply, but yet I keep coming back to it. Maybe it's because, well, it's GTA deep down, and yet it isn't. Gone are all the mafia crap, in with a great story. You start "in da hood" and end up working for, uh, let's just say a big company. This makes you feel you have evolved into something deeper than "run and gun". There are lots of cars, planes, boats etc, and the voice over are quite great. There's even old Sammy in there for you. ;) Or maybe I just mention it because I love this game and don't want to start a GTA vs Mercs discussion. Who cares what's the best game when you have both? 8)

I think amnesia storylines are cliche.

But I do like when characters think they know everything about themselves and then find out differently. :D

As for my favorite game, Tales of Symphonia for Gamecube...there aren't enough words to describe why I like it as much as I do. I still haven't been able to finish my review because there's just so much I want to say about it and I have trouble limiting myself to paragraphs and stuff like that.

Namco (who made the game) freely admit that they wanted to make fun of FFX, so the first part of the game seems like a FFX clone. That's actually part of why I like it, because I also loved FFX. But then Tales takes it further by twisting the storyline and adding all these fascinating things into the plot.

I'm also one of the very few people who prefer cel-shading to the more "realistic" styles of graphics, and so to me, TOS has beautiful, beautiful graphics. It's like an anime brought to life (and I love anime). The voice-acting is awesome and makes the characters easy to like.

TOS to me is just the complete package. It's as near to perfection as a game can get.

-Gorgeous graphics
-Great plot with lots of twists and turns
-Multiple endings
-Beautiful music
-Characters that are easy to like
-Fun combat system
-Great replay value
-Good length

I know a lot of people liked Baten Kaitos (another Namco rpg on the Gamecube) better, but Tales just really resonated with me.

I wish they could come up with stories like Memento, Mulholland Drive, Lost Highway or Identity. I love those kind of movies.

ok heres whats happening

Ok the reason I started a thread like this is because me and a select group of others are making a video game. We wanted to see what people love about games and make the best game we possiby can. We are trying to find info on what people like and why. So if this helps your write a better self review or whatever then good. (by the way the info in the first ones helped thx). Keep the reviews, or what ever you want to call them, coming.

Oh and do you like games that have a music soundtrack with words from bands or just music?

IE:
Need for speed underground, Mechassault 2 Lone Wolf(I loved this game), and amped all have soundtracks with words in them.

Zelda, Halo 2, and Fable have no lyrics in their music.

Oh and I think Halo 2 was good and all, but it got a lot of publicity from the first one and to be frank i almost died when i saw the end. I was so pissed.

Thanks

PS: contact me if you live in utah and Would want a spot on the "production" team. I would need a smaple of things that you have done so that the rest of us can review it and decide if we need you on the team. jlpvt1000@gmail.com

Usually for me soundtracks are better without lyrics. Unless the lyrics really fit the game. Some of the most memorable game soundtracks are the ones without lyrics. ie Zelda, Final Fantasy.

I wish they could come up with stories like Memento, Mulholland Drive, Lost Highway or Identity. I love those kind of movies.

I liked Memento, but I hated Lost Highway. I couldn't figure what was going on at all, and as far as I could tell there was no climax, no rising action, and no resolution of any kind in that movie.

Generally I like just music in videogames. I remember playing one SSX game where Finger Eleven was playing as I raced down the hill, but it was all "interactive" with what was happening, so I just turned the volume down and listened to my Finger Eleven cd. Songs with lyrics don't work well when they're broken up, looped, and so on. Unless its a type of game where you can listen through a 5 minute song non-stop I wouldn't bother with lyrical songs.

That was sort of the point. ;) Pretty much 99% of all non-adventure games are fairly linear. You start at point A, learn about point B and then spend the entire game going there. There's no surprises at all. How can you have a surprise ending when you learn about the ending from the cover? It's like that movie Ringu. Everyone knew what was going on before the movie was even released, so what's the point in watching it? Or the Grudge. Great movie, no surprises. I want a game with a twist. And note I said "non-adventures". They can be quite interesting at times, but they are the exception.

Well then my question is, why would anyone want to watch a movie where there seems to be no conflict, or watch a movie about a conflict that never gets resolved? Any idiot can write something that doesn't go anywhere.

Well, do you a) want a movie where you know the end after minutes, or b) a movie where you think you know how it ends after ten minutes, but it constantly changes so you end up not knowing anything until the end? Think about Fight Club. It looks obvious right from the beginning, and yet you have a surprise ending that changes everything. It's almost a different movie the second time you watch it.

I love plots twists in movies, don't get me wrong, but in the Lost Highway everything just kind of happened, so nothing surprised me because anything seemed possible. As far as I could figure out, the movie didn't even end. I loved Fight Club (it's one of my favorite movies, and would be even without the ending twist), but Lost Highway was just incomprehensible.

David Lynch is a genius. You are not supposed to understand his movies in the first go, and that's what makes them so brilliant. Anything can happen, and usually does. But at the same time nothing unexpected happens if you follow closely. It all sort of fits into the movie on way or the other, so by the end you can't find a single scene that didn't belong there. It's strange, but true. It's the same with all his movies. If only he made games... (but then again Stephen King has many of his books turned into movies, and we all know how that went...) :lol
