Ha, I bet you guys were expecting something old like the Snes. Well I decided to do Xbox because I believe this system has been so loved and hated alternatively that it's a classic in it's own right. Wow, big bulky controller, big akward design, but omg have you saw that Halo game!?! That's basically how the Xbox made it's name, dumb, akward features but gorgeous graphics and awesome power. Well obviously Halo alone was enough to get a reasonable following of supporters but not enough. Was the lack of games Ms's fault?, the Publishers?, I don't know the answer to that but there was definitely a lack of titles worth buying a system for. I believe Halo caught many eyes but there just wasn't enough there to warrant a 300$ purchase, this is the boat I was in as well. I also think the canning of "Duke" and the introduction of the "S" controller was a great move but nope, still not enough. I truly theorize that Xbox started getting popular after it dropped in price and after Xbox live started to take off. Mechassualt was a good Live game that showed the possibilties of Xbox's online capabilities. Soon enough Xbox took off and it evened managed to bump out GC for the sought after number 2 spot {not sure if it's still #2 though}. Today, Xbox has the online world locked and I don't see it letting up it's top spot anytime soon. It finally has a game library worthy of buying the sytem and at last I think Xbox is getting the respect it deserves. I don't care what ya' say but for MS do to this good with there very first console, that's credible.

I had an Xbox, then sold it.

Just Kidding, sheesh! Well, not that I sold it. ANYWAY...I think it's getting better and I wish I could try KOTOR and Ninja Gaiden. If I ever get enough space/money i'll look into it again...maybe into live. But for now, it's just a very distant thought.

Well I think it really has to do with a person's tastes in games.

For me personally, I couldn't do with just an XBOX. For the kind of games I like, XBOX makes a better companion console (to the Gamecube) than it makes a primary console. But I know that for some people the opposite is true.

Here's a few random thoughts...

I love the harddrive. No memory cards and the ability to have custom soundtracks is really cool. And since it's pretty much a brick, I don't have to worry that when I carry it around to take to someone's house for a LAN party that it's going to get jostled in the back seat of my car because it's heavy enough that it doesn't slide around at all. I actually like the big design of the XBOX.

The Controller S is quite comfortable once you get used to it. I really like the triggers for fps and racers.

I absolutely love the hard drive too. It's great. I can't imagine why they would consider *not* putting one in the XBox Next (or whatever it's gonna be called).
The controller S, I think, is the best one out there. It's sooo comfortable for me.
I do kind of think MS needs to work on it's image though. Besides Halo, if you ask joe average citizen to name an exclusive XBox game they can't come up with much. It's really just a PS2 with a hard drive, better controller and Halo. That's the biggest problem I see with it having these days (not that it's a big problem...but a problem none the less).

love halo, but don't like the controller for fighters. not so bad since i use the extra that lets me use a ps2 controller instead of it. but most of the games i love aren't on the console. there harddrive is superior and nice though. not enough games for me though for my tastes

Xbox is good at what it does, it just doesn't do much...
Hard drive is a good thing...custom soundtracks..sure. The graphics are far superior to any other home console that much is true, all one needs to do is take a look at Halo or any of the Team Ninja games (DOA 3, DOA volleyball, Ninja Gaiden). The S controller works pretty well for the most part, even on 2D fighters I find its suitable. The problems I see with MS's console are that theres just not enough variety in games.

I own an Xbox, but the reasons I own one are prolly not why most people would consider buying one. Its not really for Halo, or Team Ninja's games, but rather for KOTOR, and the upcoming KOTOR II and Jade Empire. Fable is also another great reason I still own an Xbox, along with Morrowind. If none of the aformentioned games were not available on Xbox I doubt I'd have it, and frankly if it weren't for the upcoming KOTOR II and Jade Empire I'd prolly sell it off.

Also the hard drive was a good idea but ultimatly it was a fault, and one that they now recognize, and Sony too I believe. Having hard drives makes it way too easy to play pirated games and programs on a home console, so I can totally see why they may not have it on their next console, and also why Sony has abandoned it with the PStwo.

Another problem with the Xbox is that its generally unstable...just like any MS product. I have heard and witnessed countless instances where the console froze, glitched, would not read discs, and even where the hard drive has went corrupt. These problems should not be something the console owner has to deal with when playing their games..thats why we have PCs after all...for unstable glitchy games.

I've had my PS2 freeze up about 10x more than my Xbox ever did... :?

I think it's a pretty good system, and was very pleased when I bought it that I didn't have to slap down another $35 of hard earned money to get a stupid memory card.  I also like how it decreases the load times w/the hard drive.

I'll have to argue on that one :)
there is nothing far superior about Xbox's graphics.  It might have a small edge... but there are pretty equal comparisons on the Gamecube :)

alrighty... Does anyone like using the headset for live?  Do the people get annoying over it?

Weird...I've never heard of any issues with the Xbox freezing or crashing.
Thats a good point about piracy though.

The first Xbox I owned (bought it on launch day) would constantly freeze up on games, and eventually started giving errors that it could not read the disk...on brand new games. My little brothers Xbox played fine..then one day outta the blue it popped up a full screen msg saying the Hard drive was corrupted and to call MS..it never worked again. My best friends has the same problems with games freezing and with the disk read errors. The Xbox I currently own will choke up and die when playing almost any DVD, and gives the occasional "cannot read disk..disk may be damaged" msg on brand new games.

Also these problems are pretty well documented, and have to do with MS using very cheap DVD drives in earlier versions of the Xbox, I have heard that new Xbox's are generally more stable and error free.

Just to clear up that whole disk error thing..The Xbox has been made with 3 different disk drives, the Thomson, a Samsung and a Phillips. The first Xbox's were made with the horrible Thomson drive so that's why the first Xbox's had loads of problems, as were the green Xbox's. The newer versions will feature either a Phillips drive{great} or a Samsung drive {best}. The only difference between the Samsung and the Phillips is that the Samsung drive plays any form of media, well not mp3, but cd-r, cd-rw, etc. My Xbox has a Phillips drive and it has no problems, even with Morrowind.

Ahh I see now.
I actually have had one die on me. But that was from a lightning strike...hardly a MS problem. Weird thing was it didn't get my TV or 'Cube which were plugged into the same outlet.

I would like to further clear this up, as I own a green Xbox. The green Xbox's, as far as I know, have a Philips drive, which is what mine has. The Philips drive can read CD-RW media, but not CD-R (which is a way to get mp3 files from computer to Xbox: burn RW as audio CD and transfer).

My green Xbox has little to no problems on games (other than the occasional slideshow due to it's lack of excessive power).

I love the headset. It's comfortable, and I like being able to talk to people.

Sure, some people get annoying over live. There are kids who sing during the whole freaking match (in Halo 2), or who make noises in the lobby just because they can. ::)

There's also guys who spazz out when they find out that I'm a girl and they spend the whole match trying to flirt with me. That's always annoying.

But really, as long as you have a good friends list put together, you won't run into those kind of people that often. And when you do...you can just leave the match, or put that person on mute.

You're a girl!?!?! OMG I can't believe it!!! (just kidding :p)

Yeah, I've played games of SOCOM where people would just keep singing or being really annoying, but I kinda accepted that as part of the whole online thing.

:o man... people actually sing the whole time... whats that all about?!

that would be enough to beat them with the big Xbox controller.

I don't know. And it's stupid to do in Halo 2 because of the surround sound thing. Basically in Halo 2, if you speak or make any sound on your mic and you are near someone, it will sound through their speakers and give them warning that someone is nearby.

So like...if I'm in this one spot and I hear singing that sounds like it's to my left...I can turn to my left and spot the stupid singer. And kill him. :lol

People who sing over XBL on Halo 2 are either stupid or really cocky.

Trkorecky....Thanks for bringing that to my notice, and your right, the green Xbox's do in fact have the Phillips drive, which is great. They should have some place where you can burn all the old Thomson equipped Xbox's...hehe....

Haha, man, I have a friend that likes to be a total moron when he's on Live. It's hilarious for us cuz he's sitting in the same room as us, but he must drive everyone else insane. He sings sometimes, but he doesn't actually sing, he just imitates scremo stuff and stupid songs like that, he calls everyone sexist/racist/prejudiced names, and sometimes he'll just say random words and repeat them over and over. He's kind of like that when he's not on Xbox Live though, so we've all grown used to it, but to see other people exposed to it, its pretty funny.

I've also met some people that were equally retarded. In Halo 2 once we played these guys over XBC from southern California. Well, it didn't say they were from the south, but when we entered the room they said in a heavy redneck accent "Saskatchewan, what kind of place is that? If I lived in a place called that I'd shoot myself." so we replied "I'm guessing you're from the south?" and the we preceded to absolutely embarass them in Halo 2. And then they booted us. Great times...

If the Xbox has done one thing right, its that they've brought the joy of online gaming to console users. In fact, I'd say gaming online on consoles is much more fun, as you can have 3 other friends playing with you in the same room against 4 complete strangers. Plus its less nerdy than playing online on a PC. Believe it or not one night my friends brought over their girlfriends to come watch as we played. They were heavily distracted and didn't play worth shit, but just that fact that videogaming can be used as backdrop entertainment for a date, ain't nothing wrong with that.

Well, to be honest, those are the exceptions. Its just more entertaining to talk about the extremes then to talk about your average, normal, Xbox Live user. Besides, you can mute players if you want, or just not use a headset at all, so its not a big deal.

Try it first before you judge it, otherwise you'll never know what you could be missing.
