What does it take to get a decent summer job now a days?

I'm doing school full-time now, so I'm trying to get a job for this summer so I can actually get some money for a place to live when I finally move out of my house this fall.

Of course, I can only assume I'm screwing up SOMEWHERE on the massive 200 personal question survey where they ask about every aspect of your life. I've already applied for two jobs, one as a cashier at a nearby Rite-Aid, and another as a Customer Associate at a nearby Paneras. Neither place has gotten back to me within the week I've sent in my applications (both of which are pretty much sent to the main corporation).

did you try calling them about it? do you have any experience doing either of these jobs? what is your availability like? do you look like a respectable person or a dirty hippie?...(thats not fair, i know plenty of respectable dirty hippies) all of these things are what employers look at when hiring. also try as many places as you can. apply to 6 or 7 places, then work at the place with the best looking girls.

The places might still reply back. Sometimes places want to wait a bit during the hiring phase to see how many applications they get in and then hire whoever seems best suited. Like, they might just be waiting a bit more before they narrow things down and choose who to hire.

What I really hate is job interviews, almost makes me shudder just thinking of em. lol

Haha, I'm the opposite way. If I can get an interview, it's practically a done deal. It's working on resumes and filling out applications and contacting my references and all that BS that ticks me off...

If all else fails "fake your application", no not really, I'd look online for other places around your location with available positions

I'd say definitely apply to more then 2 places. The more places you apply to the better chance you have of getting a job :D....although it is not always true I have applied to
at least 20 places and still nothing for me :'(.

it took me 1 year to get my job I have now... so the only advice I have is... get as many resumes out as you can, don't give up, don't be discouraged, believe you can, and did I say.. put out more resumes? don't lie lol.

I can't believe how long it took me to get a career level job... I have a degree, 3 certs, just got another cert, going for another associates, and then on to the master program...

another tip... diversify yourself in school. if you are going for tech... do work in business as well.

and vice versa.

it only helps you in the future... not many places have a need for an individual with 1 purpose (if you want to move up that is).

just from what I've been experiencing.

The thing is though, these aren't high-end, resume required careers here. They're just summer jobs, the kind high school kids look for.

That's another reason why it can be hard to get a job. Lots of high school kids apply as well, so your application can get lost in the shuffle.

bingo.

Why not try an internship somewhere? I believe there are some internships that are "summer long..." and many pay too. (Most paying internships here are roughly $10-12.50 an hour). Your college should be able to help you out with that one.

Persistence. When I was in highschool, there was a job I wanted bad. I dropped the application, and every day after for a solid month I went and asked about it. On the last day of that month I walked in and he just walked up to me and handed me a drug release form.

This might sound crazy, find a place where you want to work, give them your stats and leave the place.Get up bright and early around 8:00 A.M. or 9:00 A.M.,wear a suit coat or sport coat with jeans and a tie.Kind of like how Gary Busey dresses.Leave your home, walk down to the place you gave your application and ask if anything has opened up with respect to any position.

If they say no,leave your stats and be on your merry way.Set your alarm for the above mentioned time, get out of bed get dressed and go down to that place again and ask the same question with a fresh new resume and repeat this process over and over, they will get so sick and tired of seeing you do this every day they will hire you just so they don't have to go through this process of seeing you day after day after day for the same reason.Trust me,it will work,I have no reason to lie to you. :D

Good Luck. :)

Most of the time it's about who you know. Then again, that could only be because of how bad Michigan's economy is. I only got my first job because my friend got me it. I got my current job because I know my boss.
