What has become of online flash games?

I'm writing today to get your thoughts on what online flash games have become.

Our society has once again fallen into the quantity over quality scenario where putting out games every day that can be played for about the same quantity of time, is more of a priority than putting out good quality games that have been seriously thought out and taken the feedback of gamers into account in the process.

Clicking our way through portals of ongoing advertising and thousands of games that all seem to be the same, learning nothing in the process.

Have you guys seen anything lately worth checking out?

Yeah i got to agree i don't play flash games nearly as much as i used to because it's hard to find ones that don't get boring really fast.

*Shudders* Zynga - exactly what im talking about. The types of games that are only designed for short periods of play without installing that desire to want to play the game again, it's too bad really since Flash technology has come so far, but yet so few seem to exploit its full potential.

A type of edutainment game that makes you think at the same time as playing and it not just designed for a click through advertisement for something else, often unrelated.

Do you think that this trend is coming to a close or just getting started?

I found a neat multiplayer game called Castle Wars a while back I played with one of my buddys, but I cant seem to find the link now.

There's actually one that I found lately that has given me hope amongst the mess of what's available online lately - Virtuo Sport Summer. They have their own site so there's no rummaging around endless clickable sites, the gameplay is awesome and I actually want to go back and play it again. They've integrated a role playing type aspect by giving the option to improve your Virtuo (your virtual athlete) by assigning points gained through completing the different kayaking, climbing and mountain biking courses in real locations throughout the world.

When you get a chance, let me know what you think. I've put a little screenie below to give you more of an idea of what it looks like:

Your post was edited by a moderator because it was against the rules to post a link since you are new. I would recommend taking the link back out of your post. Than again, I am sure you weren't planning on sticking around anyways so I guess it doesn't really matter.

No problem, ill remove the link. And yes, I will be around :)

Good to hear! Sorry if I came off harsh, but honestly like 99% of the time when somebody comes here and gets their link taken down they never come back.

No need for apologies :) I completely understand. I am a bonified, genuine gamer and have been since I was 4 lol 26 years later, still goin strong!

I know it's profitable, and that's kinda my point - why don't they take some of those profits and make something worthwhile with longivity. Half the flash games that you play, you dont even remember the name or can't find the link again because it's been lost amongst the rubble of advertising.

Profit margins. Why put more effort into a game? That just costs more money that will take away from profits. As long as it's still really profitable, quality won't go up.

It's also a bit of a niche market. If a company can make a short game that requires little commitment, but is fun enough to get someone to pay a few bucks to play, they've made a sale.

I cannot believe how many ipod apps most of my friends have. These lame little applications really cannot compete with full game releases, but, in many cases, they aren't. Most flash games are made as a momentary distraction, not as a dedicated game that most hardcore gamers would even consider.

I will admit that I play fishville, but only because I specifically have a hobby of having aquariums... At the same time, it is what it is and does not really compete with my console or PC games in general. Plus, I've never paid a cent to play the game. :D

You arent getting the full experience without sand dollars. xD

Speaking of sand dollars, a little off topic, but when I was about 5 I used to collect the sand dollars I found on the beach thinking I would be rich. I had apparantly seriously misunderstood the explaination of my mother of what these were and was pissed when I found out they were worth no monetary value lol sorry back to the topic...

Most of the good games are worth paying a small fee for, the problem is everyone is used to free gaming, but still complaining of the low quality available. It's obvious that if developers want to put out quality titles, they have to be able to pay for the extra technology and staff available to make it happen. We want more, we don't want to pay more, but yet we still complain. It's quite the predicament and the mentality of the gaming community is going to need to shift sooner or later.

There are still ways to get Sand Dollars, it just takes a lot longer than paying for it...

Actually, if one pays for sand dollars, there is no point to playing the game. Besides just watching the fish, the only real draw is to try to earn Sand Dollars in the game.

In ancient coastal communities on the Andean side of South America spondylus shells were often used as currency.
