Bold part would be in an optimal scenario that I do not live in. No dependents or family, or pets.
I live fairly far north. So my plan would be to head north to Canada (less people, less zombies)
No cars, bikes only. Bikes are more mobile, do not need fuel, will help keep you in shape, and are easier to maintain.
I would carry only essentials. A map, food, water, a weapon. Probably an E-tool. Flashlight and batteries maybe.
The only hard part, for me, in a realistic scenario, would be family and pets. I would not want to abandon either, but pets would be a drain on food, water, and time. Family would be hard to manage and would be more mouths to feed etc. In real life, I would do the following.
Start hording water. We have roughly 64 liters of bottled water in our garage, but no idea how long we may be stuck inside. So, fill all containers available with water, and fill all bathubs and sinks with water once those containers are full. Also, we have a small creek running through our backyard. We could use it as a source of water when our stores run out.
Then, my father and I would fortify our house. Takes down doors, cover windows, use anything. We would axe our 2nd story porch steps for extra wood and to give a safe lookout position/waste dumping position. Tear down our (small) fence for extra wood. Gather all potential weapons (we don't own any guns, which would not be very useful anyways) such as shovels, golf clubs, baseball bats, etc.
Then, after defense and immediate needs are taken care of, start planning for when utilities run out. Water and power mainly. Get a bucket for the bathroom, and dump it over the porch rail to dispose of. Plan out food consumption. Plan to ration nonperishables (canned goods, ramen, etc). Try to get the most out of what we have that will perish (bread, milk, etc).
Now that food, water, and safety have been taken care of. Carefully eliminate any zombies near the house. Then I would run to the store/gas station and loot it of all I could carry we would need (food, batteries, etc). After that, sit tight and see how everything unfolds. I would eliminate all zombies ASAP, to avoid an unstoppable horde from building up. Burn the bodies, of course, to avoid disease.
Following that plan, me and my family would survive.
Yes, I plan for worst case scenarios
