Will The PS3 Play Second Hand/Used/Preowned Games?!

Let's hope this is true.

PS3 Will Play Second Hand Games

Date Posted: 19 Hours ago

Following speculation among online gaming communities that the PS3 would use licensing to keep people from using, selling and owning second hand, or pre-owned games, Sony UK has issued an official response debunking the notion.

"We have definitely not been communicating that," UK spokesperson Jennie Kong confirmed. "It's false speculation. We don't have any further knowledge about this topic - either officially or unofficially, to be frank."

The rumor, restarted by GamesRadar, has spread around the internet through means of various bulletin boards and gaming sites/blogs. Speculation, fueled by the still recent "rootkit" fiasco Sony Pictures Entertainment faced last year, swirled around the used game trade and whether or not the ends or the means of such measures were good or bad. While only marignally different than rumors that surfaced last November, this particular rumor took a different approach to the same claim: that Sony was attempting to kill used game sales. While Sony would like customers to buy new games over used games undoubtably, they have officially and unofficially denied any forcible measures used to ensure this.

I would think the the negative reaction would be too strong for Sony to even think of doing this. It would be suicide. Not to mention the fact that, say you buy a new system, would you have to buy all new games again? The ends just don't justify the means. Not even a little.

The PS2 played PS1 games. One would assume you could play PS1 + PS2 games on the PS3.

That's not what he's talking about. The rumor is that you can only play the disc you bought on your own PS3. If you sell it or give it away it will not play.

I agree with Tommy, it's complete and utter suicide, but they did try to get away with it with that rootkit and thought people were too stupid to know what it did. So if it does happen I would not be surprised.
