480p for Wii

October 19, 2006 - Nintendo last month revealed that its new Wii home console would ship with composite cables for standard resolution televisions. However, the company did not specify whether or not high-definition TV owners would be able to separately purchase Wii component cables to run games in progressive-scan, and hence we've been bombarded with a steady flow of questions from concerned readers.

Well, today you can finally stop flooding our e-mail boxes because Nintendo of America has commented on the subject and yes, your component cables are on the way.
A spokesperson for the company told IGN Wii this morning that the Wii component cables would be available for purchase with the launch of the console in November. The cables will cost $29.99 and will only be available through online retail outlets, including Nintendo's store, Best Buy, Circuit City and EB Games.

If you already own GameCube component cables, you're out of luck because these are not compatible with the Wii console.

Why Nintendo is again only selling its component cables via online retailers -- as it did with GameCube -- is a mystery, but at least the solution will be available immediately.

Nearly all of the 30 or so Wii launch window games run in 480p and 16:9 modes.

I'm going to have to get those for the DLP tv I'm getting.

Interesting that that they can't pack a cable in. There is nothing special about a component cable that it needs to cost 30 dollars. Its just 3 shielded wires. You can pick up a S-Video cable which is 2 shielded grounded signals for just 8 dollars. Oh well :(

I don't see this as a problem. After all, Sony is supposedly charging $90 for their cable. So $30 is nothing in my opinion.

Probably is an HDMI Cable. Depends on the length of the HDMI Cable for the price. Maybe it is a 10 footer or something.

It's not concrete, but I got my information from the PS3 section of this forum. Someone was lamenting about the price being $90 for the HDMI. And the funny thing is that the PS3 is being marketed for hi def TVs, and the components to maximize performance is extremely high priced and not included. It's like buying a car, and having to push it over to the parts department to buy the engine because it wasn't included in the original purchase...

What gets me about the composite thing is that composite is next to the worst picture you could have. Lots of color bleed and washed out colors. It should just be included as a cheap fall back for people who have older TVs. The cost of making a composite cable is under $10. The cost of making a component cable is only marginally higher than the composite due to needing two more wires.

Only if you need it to be in excess of 15 feet...

You can easily get one for $10-$15, and if you just dropped $600 for the system and a couple grand for an HDTV, I doubt one $10 cord is going to bother you. Besides, unlike the relationship an engine shares with a car, the PS3 will still work quite well without the cable, but the possibility to upgrade it as the technology becomes cheaper is there. Thus buying something like, say, the Wii for instance, is like buying a car that won't accept newer and better parts as they become available. The PS3 on the other hand at least gives you the ability to push it into the parts department, which is a strictly Wii free zone.

I think this is great news!! Finally can play games in HD.

Nope. You can play it on an HDTV but it won't be in HD. You probably won't even notice the difference with the component cables. 480p is just regular resolution in progressive mode. Nothing special.

As for the HDMI issue, personally, I would just wait until a third party came out with a cheaper one. Most if not all digital cables are made the same.
